LABOUR’S FIGHT
On Sales Tax SECURES IMPORTANT AMEND MENT. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, February 22. The contention that the Labour I ’art y beeu instrumental in secur. ing several amendments in the Sales Tax Bill and has, by its efforts, considerably improved the legislation, was made in the House of Representatives to-night, when thqf new Sub Clause, stipulating that any information under the legislation must be laid within five year s from the, date of the commission of an offence came up for discussion. Mr Lee pointed out that, prior to this amendment being made, there had been no time limit. This amendment was the. result of the representations which had Ih’h made by the so-called destructive Labour Party.
During the discussion on the Bill, hp said, not one word had been heard from the Government benches. The Opposition had been instrumental, in forcing the hands of the Government on several occasions. Air Coates said that there had been other people considering the Bill with a view to suggesting amendments. Air Barnard said that the Opposition had been responsible for the securing of several excellent amendments to the Bill as thi- result of the criticism which it had mode on the measure. Mr Lee: “It pays not to be servile! ’’
