REEFTON NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, February 15. The morning train from Greymouth to-day was over an hour late in arriving at Recfton, no doubt due to last night’s storm affecting the line. Upon enquiry to-day as to when the postponed schools excursion would take place, the Secretary, Mr H. Campbell, stated that a meeting of the Committee would be held as soon as possible, possibly to-morrow night, to discuss the matter, anc decide upon a date after consultation with the Railway Department. The electrical storm last evening was responsible for putting a number of telephones in town out of order, as well as several wires in the 'country districts being damaged and knocked down. As the telegraph engineer, Mr T. Russell, is engaged in repairing in the outlying districts, the Reefton tele, phones affected were not repaired today. Mr J. B. Discaciati, who has been on a brief holiday to Christchurch and south, returned by last evening’s express. Miss Hutton, who has been on the teaching staff of the Recfton D.H S. fur some years past, has accepted an appointment under the Invercargill Board, and leaves for that district shortly. During her residence in Recfton, Miss Hutton has taken an active part in various Societies, and her departure will be regretted. The weather yesterday afternoon grew from bad to worse, and thunder and lightning accompanied the heavy rain and strong wind. About 5.30 a severe thunder clap and accompanying lightning fused the electric light circuit on the Buller Road. The light was, however, restored in a few minutes. The thunder continued until well on in the hours of this morning, and included some particularly heavy clashes which kept practically the whole of the residents of the district awake. Phenomenally heavy showers of rain also fell, and altogether the night was the roughest experienced in the district for some years past. The Boisterous weather of last evening, and with no sign of it clearing. made it clear that it was inadvisable to hold the schools excursion to Rapa hoe to-day, and the School Committee' at 5.30 last evening decided to postpone it. This decision was at once telephoned throughout the town so that it could become generally known, and thus obviate any arrangements being made by residents.
