SCHAAF’S SAD FATE Carnera’s Arrest ON TECHNICAL CHARGE. NEW YORK, February 11. Ernie Schaaf died to-day. With him were his mother, Mrs. Lucy Schaaf, and his manager aud friend, Johnny Buckley. Dr. Byron Stookly. brain specialist, who was in charge of the operation, said that Schaaf must have been knocked out on his feet. Throughout the thirteen rounds on Friday night. the spectators, who shouted for action, crying “Fake!” were struck with the fact that Schaaf offered only a desultory defence, at times walking into Carnera’s gloves with his arms spread almost wide. The blow which dropped him landed lightI ]v. Schaaf recovered from influenza I only a fortnight before the fight, j His friends said that the burning ambition of Schaaf was to enter the priesthood. He was a devout Catholic. and a close friend of the Rev. Father Steuver, who administered the last rites. Shortly before coming here to train, Sehaaf attended a reb gious retreat in Boston. Camera has been ordered to be ar rested, on a technical charge of man slaughter. Dr. Charles Norris, chief medical examiner, New York City, said that the death of Schaaf resulted from natural causes, and not from any in jury received in the Camera bout. Dr. Norris. who performed an autopsy, said that the exact nature of the sub stance pressing on the brain was to be determined by a microscopic exam ination later. Dr. Norris’s opinion is contrary to that of Dr. Stookly, who said that J Sehaaf must have been knocked out on his feet, and that the damage could not have resulted from anything but this match.
