(Our Own Corespondent.; Public Meeting, WESTPORT, February 14. The Secretary of the Buller Valley Unemployed Association recently wrote the Mayor, Mr J. H. Harkness, as follows:—“At a genera] meeting of the Association a resolution was passed requesting you to call a public meeting in Westport and to invite all public bodies, business people, unions and unemp'oyed to d p al with the unemployed question. As you know this problem affects every man, woman and child in the Buller district, whether employed or unemployed We hope and entrust that you will take a lead in this matter as it i s very urgent, and if possible to call the meeting before the visit of Mr Jessep, fhe deputy chairman of the Unemployment Board.” It. was learned last evening that Ihr Deputy Mayor, Mr J. Menzies, in the absence of Mr Harkness would convene the meeting as requested for Thursday evening- in the Town Hall. Cost of Living Goes Up. At a meeting of the local blanch of the Watersiders’ Federation held recently. the sharp rise in the price of many domestic requirements following the pegging of exchange rates at a high figure was discussed and the following resolution in connection with same was unanimously adopted: “Seeing the Government has increased the cost of living by pegging the exchange rate to 25 per cent., thereby reducing the workers’ purchasing power, the Westport watersiders instruct the New Zealand Watersiders’ Federation to cite the New Zealand Waterside Employers’ Association for a conference on behalf of the watersiders of the Dominion to consider an increase in wages in comparison with the increased cost of living.”
Nelson Education Board At the monthly meeting of the above it was decided to a sl< the Department for grant to enlarge the Lyell School, and also remove the Newton Flat School to the original site. The Chairman intimated that as a result of an interview with the Minister, jt was learnt that there was no hope of securing a grant this year for the Reefton School and teacher’s residence at IkamatiKi. The Charleston Committee was granted £6 towards the cost of a new tank. A request from the Waiuta Committee for £l2 for fencing was h*‘ld over for report The Westport Commit tee was granted cost of repairing a drain damaged by earthquake. The Board decided to call tenders for pur chase of school residence at Charleston. A lease of the old school building at Caplegton was granted to J. Janson. The Chairman mentioned that the Board was liable to secure from the Department a provision for the conveyance of children to school as requested by the Tiroroa Committee. The only alternative was the establishment of a household school at Berlins which I would mean parents providing teachers’ board and a school building. Teaching Appointments. At the meeting of the Nelson Education Board the following teachers were appointed:— Secondary, Takaka District High School, 21 applicants, Grace Alpin, B. of Carterton. Secondary Assistant, Reef ton High School, 40 applicants, Henry Haigh, B.Sc., Rewanui. Head Teacher. Millerton, 13 applicants, Chas. Randle, Waiwhetu. Assistant Mistress, Inangahua June lion, 10 applicants, Miss K. Mori. Brooklyn. Assistant Mistress, Murchison, nine applicants, Miss E. Bruce. Assistant. Mistress, Millerton, no ap plicants. —It was referred to the Chairman, Secretary and Senior Inspector to till. The Senior Inspector submitted repo its on classes for 1932. The Chairman said the matriculation results at several High Schools were highly satisfactory Granity had seven passes. Reefton 3. Motueka 3, Takaka 3, Murchison I The Granity result was outstanding and deserved special mention at the Board table. The next meeting of the Education Board will be held at Westport about the 21st March provided the Chairman can get the Minister ’ K permission New Sluicing Co. Registered. the unlisted stock on the Christchurch Stock Exchange on Saturday, buyers offering sixpence with sellers demanding one shilling. Mr Jessep’s Visit. The County Clerk, Mr 4’. F. Schadick stated yesterday that Mr Jessep, who was to have visited Westport this week will not now arrive until next week. Mr Jessep in a telephone conversation with Mr Schadick said the reason for the postponement was to enable him to spend several days in the district. Owing to pressure of business in Wellington he would be unable to spend more than one day this week. Shipping. The Op'ihi is due to-night to load for Lyttelton and Dunedin. The Kiwitea leaves Auckland on Thursday for this port. The Karepo is expected to-day to load for Australia. The Kaiinai is due here about Monday next with genera] cargo. The U.S.S. Co. received radio advice that the Kini is sheltering and the date of her arrival is uncertain The Fairburn arrived from Wellington yesterday. The Government steamer Matai arrived in port this morning.
