TROTTING. “When it eume . to the world’s champion honours.’’ (states the American journal, the Horseman and Fair World), “New Zealand comes into the limelight. Harold Logan, a grandson of 4 the great Star Pointer (who was the

first two-minute performer), paced tbe record for two miles at 4 min 16 2-ssec, at Addington in November. The American record for pacers is 4 miu 17sec, made by Dan Patch in an exhibition dash at M acorn, Georgia, in 1903. Harold Logan made his record in a race with a whole flock of starters.” Our American friends have not taken into account that Harold Logan has a paced record of 4min 13 2-ssec over two miles. In their country, winning records only are acknowledged. Mr H. Allan, who race ß Rollo and Titri. recently added another horse to his team which is trained by R. B. Berry nt Addington. The latest mem ber is a three-year-old gel ling by Guy Parrish from Melodious. which was bred by Mr 11. W. Kitchingham. The New Zealand Trotting Conference has circularised all the trotting dubs asking them urgently to express an opinion on the desirability of the rules being amended to permit ol the early introduction of win-and-place betting. A majority of the clubs . have held meetings and all of these’ have decided in favour of the new I method. As only a two-thirds majority is, needed to enable the conference executive to widen the present betting regulations to permit of the win-and-place system being used it now seems certain that the necessary amendments to the rules will be made. At present, trotting clubs may pay three dividends on a certain number of starters, but the proportion has been fixed at 70, 20 and 10 per cent, respectively fo. first, second and third. Under the new system, the proportions would revert to 33 1-3 per cent. for each placed horse. The Auckland Trotting Club has applied for permission to install the win and place betting system at its meeting on Saturday and M’ednesday next. Permission has been granted and it is believed that th-e M’ellington Trotting Club will take similar action with re- | sped to its meeting on March 5. These , are the first trotting dubs to adopt ■ the new system and the executive ol i the conference has taken this r.etion as the result of the unqualified approval of the idea expressed in answer to a circular letter issued to all trot ting dubs recently. Craganour. nominated for the Denton Memorial at New Brighton, is assessed on a 4.43 mark. The New Brighton race is a 4.40 limit. Renova, is back again with T. Price has decided not to persevere with the juicing gelding Nelsonian, with whom he won a two-mile race al the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting in December lasi. Nelsonian is owned by Mr. E. C. NP Dermott. who took him over from the Nelson trainer, L. F. Berketl. in exchange for a novice pacer in August last. Nelsonian will in future occupy a place in the same stable; as Garner. The consistent pacer, Dillon Logan, is nursing an injured leg, due to hitting out while in his loosebox. He diii it prior to racing at the February meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, but at the time it was not considered serious. The son of John Dillon and Belle Logan has had to be eased in his work. He may be up and doing again in time for the New Brighton Club’s meeting.
