REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.j REEFTON, February 9. Mr T. Fitzpatrick was the successful tenderer for the painting of the Waiuta Miners’ Hall. The Secretary of the Reefton Bowling Club has received an intimation from the Greymouth Bowling Club that they will play the Reefton Club on the Greymouth green on Wednesday next. The Reefton Club propose to send three rinks to Greymouth on that day, when

the Schools Excursion takes place. Sister Clark, who resigned from the Reefton Hospital staff, left at an early hour this morning for Blenheim, en route to Feilding. She was accompanied by Mrs Ashwin and family. The Greymouth cricket team, who are to play Nelson to-morrow and on Saturday, passed through Reefton this morning. The team is under the management of Mr D. Mackay. Reports from the Maruia and Murchison districts are now to hand in regard to the damage caused by the storm on January 31st. Murchison does not appear to have had such a severe rainfall as other parts, as little damage lias been sustained there, and from Murchison to Maruia, little dam age has been done, except for two or three minor washouts. The road from Springs Junction is in good order, except for an amount of debris at Waterfall Creek near the Springs, which is being removed. The conditions from • Rahu Saddle coming towards Reefton are, however, much worse. There are several minor washouts at the 19 Mile Bridge, where a big tree came down and damaged the bridge. There is also severe scouring there. The bridge Ims however, been re instated, but with continual erosion from the hillsides the creek bed is being raised up. This is now being remedied. The branch bridge at the Nine Mile is one of the most serious problems. Timber coming down the river evidently struck the piles of the bridge on the Maruia side, letting one span down about three feet; and erroding the approach. A ford has now been made, but this will only bo crossable during fine weather. Above Watson’s farm, a very ugly erosion has taken place, which will cost a consid erable anjpunt of money to repair. Here a deviation has been constructed and motor cars may now be taken ove r it. It is singularly unfortunate that this occurrence should happen when the road was in very fair order over its entire length. It is most imperative that this road is kept, in a good state, as it is the only alternative road to Murchison, and Nelson. Should anything unforseen happen on the Buller Road to Murchison, of where there is always a probability, it would mean the isolation of Reefton from the northern end of the electorate.

At the monthly meeting of the School Committee, there were present Messrs W. B. Auld (Chairman). D. Panckhurst, .1. Patterson. T Dellaea C. Potter, C. Dobson, C Cleaver and H Campbell (Secretary). Mr Pratt (Headmaster), was also present. Correspondence was received from the Nelson Education Board, re. appointment of Miss Fitzgerald as probationary assistant, and Miss Joyce, as relieving secondary assistant. The Headmaster’s report wa s also read. The S p ei-etary reported that arrangements were well in hand for the lixcursion to Rapahoe on the loth instant The following were appointed to sell tickets on the morning of the Exclusion: —Inaugahua Junction, Messrs Panckhurst. and Campbell; Reefton Station. Messrs W, B. Auld. J. Patterson. T Dellaea., C. Potter, W. Pratt, T. Hepburn; Air Clarke to sell the tickets for senior scholars. It was proposed by Air Patterson and seconded "by Mr Panckhurst that representation be made to the Nelson Board regarding information as to the progress made in the matter of the erection of a new school at Reefton, gild that Air Holyoake AI.P., also be approached asking for hig co operation in the matter. The motion was carried. The Visiting Committee fo r next month arc Mesesrs Auld and Campbell. The p'assing of accounts concluded the meeting.
