BULLER ELECTORATE

UNEMPLOYMENT ALLOCATION. Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., has receiv’d th,, following letter (3rd Decern be . 1932) ’from the Minister of Employment: “Referring to the representations made by you Q u Wednesday, 23rd ultimo, in support of the request in a tel* grain addressed to you by the ALiyor of Westport regarding the allocation of funds for relief work. at Wcstpo.t. I have to confirm what was stated in my telegraphed rcplv to you ot the 23th ultimo, viz. that allocations to Westport and other West Coast towns are all based on the number of registered and eligible unemployed, and computed on a similar basis as in the case o; the larger secondary centres, and that the reduced relief in the week ended 26th ultimo was apparently due to the employment of a greater number ot men in that week than was the case during the preceding week. In amplifi cation of this, I would point out that my enquiries show that there has been > • n<* variation made in the basis of the* allocation during the past three weeks, . and any decrease in the allocations I over that period would be accounted .' for by a corresponding decrease in the M number of registered and eligible un- , I employed. I may point out that so far [j as tin* Buller is concerned, the alloca- », tiou is <i n the same basis as obtains in . ■ such places as Wanganui, Palmerston - ' North and Napier, and is also on th’’ i : same basis as all otht*: mining towns. Tin* reason 'for th,, i duction in the •I allocation three weeks ago is that the : Board's average weekly rate <if Cxp ndilur,. during rhe winter months ; >eiy cou>id< rahly exceeded its average I w < kl\ income, anfi consequently it became necessary for the Board to reduce experditure during the spring and sumno r months, so that its outgoing could ! be kept within the resources available . for the full financial year.”
