SEDITION CHARGE
Brisbane Editor SENT FOR TRIAL. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn - ). (Received September 22 at 9 p.m.) BRISBANE, September 22. In the adjourned case in which the charge of sedition has be°n brought against him. Martin Reading (Editor of th e “Brisbane Telegraph’’ was to-day committed for trial at th“ Criminal Court on November 14th. Bail was allowed at £BO. The case against the. publisher, George Melton, was adjourned for one week. Note. —T he charges against the former Christchurch, New Zealand journalist, Martin Reading, and George Melton, the editor and publisher respective ly O’f the “Brisbane Telegraph,” are those of having published seditious matter under the heading “Premier versus People,” wherein a contributor, who signed himself “J. Martin,” suggested that the Premier of Queensland, Mr Forgan Smith, must be in sympathy with Communism, of otherwise he would not allpjw Communist processions. The letter also- urged the formation of a. “New Guard” and urged a refusal to p'ayi taxes, adding: “The people have the Government at their mercy if only they have the- courage to act.” Reading formerly was Editor of the “Lyttelton Times.”
