FIRST BOARD MEETING
On March 20. 1923. the first meeting of the newly-formed Grey District Power Board was hold in the Borough Council Chambers, when there were present:— Messrs F. If. Denton (returning officer), JI. F. Doogan, G. E. Perkins and D. Tennent (Greymouth). 11. G. (’arter, 1). Baybutt. A. Robertson (Grey County), J. P. Wick (Brunner), !•’. E. Cook (Runanga), and .1. Taylor (Cobden). Mr Denton outlined the history of the election of the Board and detailed the correspondence leading up to the convening of the meeting. ll<‘ called for nominations for chairman. Mr Perkins was nominated by Mr Tennent, but declined. On the motion of Messrs Baybutt and Robinson, Mr Doogan was unanimously chosen as chairman. Mr Doogan, on taking the chair, said he h:id every confidence in the success of the power scheme. It would, ho said, be decided by the experts whether the source of their power should be steam of water, but there were facilities for either. The institution of the Board opened up possibilities not only for the supply of light and power, but for new industries. Then would follow cheaper power. | The question as to whether the powler should be supplied by steam or hydro-electricity was held over, the Board meanwhile to apply to the Minister of Public Works for the various reports made by the Department’s engineer on the possible source of power in the district.
