GANDHI’S FAST
REAL OBJECT To Wipe Out Caste (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). CALCUTTA, September 21. Gandhi, interviewed at Yeravada Gaol by the Hindu leaders, expressed opposition to separate electorates for the Depressed Classes, but said that if a conference of the Hindus and the Depressed Leaders favoured the reservation of seats in joint electorates, he was ready to accept, and to consider stopping his fast. Doctor Ambedkar, on behalf of the Depressed Classes, consulted the community, and the leaders of the conference, late last night, evolved a now scheme based on joint electorates with adequate safeguards for the protection of the Depressed Classes, and a deputation journeyed to Yeravada to seek Gandhi’s approval. Gandhi, in an interview, declared his aim was to secure the complete eradication of caste and untouchability. He desired a permanent agreement to this effect. “This is what I would delight in dying for,” he said.
