(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, September 21. It is understood that certain local milling interests have made a profitable deal in timber in th e Bruce Bay district, securing the rights to the white pine on the Maori lands of that locality. Th e ibush. secured is said to be very valuable. It is stated that th ( > firms are going to transfer n couple of their mills from this district to Bruce Bay in order to cut out the timber in question. In his flight over the Southern Alps to Sockburn yesterday Mr A. Nancekivpll ran into heavy clouds on the Canterbury- side, with snow falling, lie came down through the clouds when past Oxford and thence went on to the aerodro.nic. arriving before noon. Th© return journey was commenced at 2 /p.m. and after an uneventful solo flight, Hokitika was reached in about an hour and a-halt. Comipilaint is made that, people are being annoyed by the chain letter nuisance, but anybody securing such a letter has only to burn it. The old animosity among whitebaiters on Mahinapua Crock is again in evidence. The other night one timber-trench completely’ disappeared. Prospectors in South Westland have found ground in the Blue River district which has been worked in the early, days, although they had imagin j ed it to bo_ virgin country. The old-time dance held in St. Mary’s Club rooms last night attracted a fair attendance. Miss L. Dale supplied the music. After many weeks -prospecting in the Back Creek district, a party of three men have struck wash, and have ob tailed some really good samples of heavy gold. The cfxtcnt of the find will be known only by the result of further work.

The Gael was expected to leave Wellington to-day for Hokitika and sails for Bruce Bay at the end of the week.

The victim of the Ross shooting affray, Athol C. Potter, was reported at the Hospital to-day to be making satisfactory progress. A hockey tournament for the Newman (Cup is taking plae C( on Cass Square this afternoon and is well attended.
