GANDHI’S FAST
INSPIRES ALL HINDUS Towards Unity (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). CALCUTTA, Sept. 19. Gandhi to-day began a fast, which will continue till a settlement is reached of the difference between caste Hindus and depressed classes, otherwise known as the untouchables. A wave of national fervour has swept over Hindu India, as the result of Gandhi’s resolve. Hindus of all classes and castes are coming together in the effort to bring about unity, so that Gandhi’s fast may be unnecessary. Tn Benares, thousands of untouchables of the lowest castes were allowed to bathe in the sacred water, where for thousands of years, only the highest caste Hindus has been allowed. A party of Shamozai tribesmen, attempting a night attack on a camp of Chitral relief troops, met a hot reception, twenty being killed and scores i injured. | The tribesmen attacked in strength. I but were ambushed in fierce hand to | hand fighting. Two of the troops were killed and three wounded. Gandhi Conciliatory INTERVIEW IN GAOL. HOPE OF A SETTLEMENT CALCUTTA. September 20. Interviewed in gaol yesterday Gandhi revealed a modified attitude on rhe electorates issue. He practically agreed to consider any alternative proposal which would not provide for separate electorates for the depressed ( lasses, and ho receded from his form or firm stand against the reservation of seats in the joint electorates. Gandhi’s new proposals will be placed before the Hindu depressed classes’ leaders at noon to-day. The cordiality with which the problem was discussed at yesterday’s meeting gives the hope of an early settlement.
