(Our Own Corrasponden'.) REEFTON, September 19. Mr and Mrs Courtney Fraser, who have been in Canterbury for some months past, returned to Reef ton by Saturday evening’s express. Mr A. A- Stewart, mining engineer, arrived in Rcefton Ou Saturday, and this morning left for .-he Waitahu sluicing claim. Dr. Brough, who for some time was locum tenens in Reefton for tho late Dr. E. H. Scott, was a visitor on Saturday. After looking up some old acquaintances, he went on to Grey mouth. Dr. Brough has, for the past few months, been at Karamea. The first ret-union of the recently established branch of th Returned Soldiers’ Association !:<ook place in the Oddfellows’ Hall, on Saturday evening. The President. Mr W. S. Pratt presided over an attendance of over 40 members. During the evening, the following toasts were honoured: —“The King’’; “Departed Comrades”; “The Success of tire Reef ton Branch”, pro posed by th(. Chairman.; “Territorial Forces,” proposed by Mr J. B. Auld, responded to by Major Campbell; “The British Forces,” proposed by Mr Pratt, and responded to by Messrs Browning and Renwick; “The Infantry.” prop'osed by Mr D. Wills) reported Miat the incorporation of the branch was completed, and gave the meeting information regarding the issue of badges. All present thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and the enthusiasm of the members augur s well for the establishment of a very virile biance in Reef ton. The evening closed with the singing of “Auld Lang The Inangahua Shiver Band commenced work on 1 lie enlargement of their hall by the addition of a room. This ha.s become a necessity through th'* increasing patronage accorded the various functions held there, and when cump'le’ rd. will be a great convenience. Mrs Lamberton, accompanied by her son Mr Thomas Lamberton, after re siding in Christchurch for some years past, returned to Rcefton o n Saturday '■veiling For some considerable time there has be' n a disposition for all kinds of arti clcs to be taken from buildings, which are lefft without tenants for any length of time. Doors, windows, stoves, grates etc., have been taken without any application to th e owners. The latest theft however, i s to take fh c wires off fences. A resident of Soldiers had occasion the other day to look for a missing animal, and when doing so, found to his amazement, that two wires had been taken off about twen/y chains of fencing on onq side of his paddock, and one wire for about the same distance on another side. As th e whole of the staples also had been taken out of the posts a s well as out of yho droppers, i| is evident the thief or thieves must have spent some time over the job. The owner wants to know what ’’hey will come at next. Two rugby matches were played on the Reef to n Racecourse yesterday, th'* third, Waiuta v. the Rest, not taking place through the non-appearance of the Waiuta team. The junior seven-a-side game was one of the b-st seen this season. Both teams, Waratah and Black’s Point, made the pace tori id from the start. Waratahs wer e rhe favourites, and scored a try within a minutes of starting, H. Evans going over the line. Black’s Point, however, were not to be denied, and Sara and W. and P. Galway secured tries, none being convert <ed. Had Waratah won the game, the comp't'tition would have be«‘ n ended but th e win by Black’s Point entails an other game, when there is certain to b e a greap many spectators to see the ( struggle. The s< nior rugby game. Murchison v. Inangahua, was disappointing, inasmuch as th e visitors were expected to extend the home team. The reverse was th p case, however, and the Inangahua team won oasily b v 23 points to 6. Tries were scored bv Robertson. Allen and Glennie. The visitors left for home in the evening.
