Following a decision reached last Thursday by the strike comniitt-et of th • Unemployed Workers’ Alovement to declare “black,” all work at the new conditions involving longer hours for the same pay, pickets were sent out by the organisation this morning. Numbers of men in the city gangs ei’her did not start relief work, or ceased shortly after starting, the majority being single men. Quotas for tho country works were also affected, a number of married n on, who sought to go to work, beii.g prevented from doing so, as the loads were insufficient for the lorries, with the single men absenting them selves. Later, a large deputation waited on th;? Um mployed Committee and presented several demands, including the abolition of camp's, also for 12s 6d per day, with no stand dow n week, and sustenance payments to all. The Committee decided to forward these demands to the Unemployment Board. CARTERTON. September 19. A meeting of the Carterton branch of ihe Wellington relief workers, was held o TI Saturday, when it was decided that no man should go to work to-day, as a protest against the new conditions of relief work . Ir was stated that in the first week of the neiw conditions, the days of employment had been cut down. Instead of five days only four and three quarters at ten shillings a day. This cut would seriously affect the already re stricted relief earnings. The local branch wish it clearly understood that this move is not a strike, but a course adopted with a view to meeting in conference, representatives of the Wairarapa South County Council, and (3io Carterton Tradesmen’s Association in an earnest endeavour to s e cure better working conditions.
