RACING. Waiwene and Minerval, members of F. Christmas’s team, arc in excellent order, and perhaps they will come to light and win some good races to make up for the misfortune that, has befallen Red Heckle. Waiwene has worked impressively during the past week, and everything points to this smart filly; winning again soon. She is engaged at Ashburton. . Minerval has improved in appearance since the National, and his work, too, 1 has been very good. This gelding appears to be just coming right, and consequently he may turn out a class middle-distance performer. He is down | to contest the Ashburton Handicap of one mile, in which he has only got to reproduce his National form to render him extremely dangerous. Grand Jury, having his first race since lie won the Alasterfon Cup in April, put up an excellent performance in finishing fourth in the open sprint at Alarton on Saturday, and | once he is stepped out at a rather longer distance he will be very hard to beat. Tie was finishing over every-

thing on Saturday. Bambury, who was the winner of

I the five furlongs Farewell Handicap at Marton, is a three-year-old colt by Scherzo—Legality. Ho is trained by A. Cook for Mr Al. H. Tims, of Te Awamutu. Bambury had only two starts last season when he won the Calliope Handicap, live furlongs, at the Takapuna Summer meeting, whoch was his first appearance in public. At the Pakuranga meeting at Ellerslie last month, Bambury gave indications that his turn would not be long when he was one of the pacemakers for nearly six furlongs in the Sylvia Park Handicap, which seven furlong event was won by his stable mate, Sea Ruler. Bambury was a prominently supported first favourite on Saturday and never looked in danger of defeat once the field settled down. He should soon achieve further results over sprint courses. High Commissioner’s failure to run no closer than third in the hurdles at Alarton was disappointing to his connections, for Tutehcn had him in excellent order for the event and his prospects were assessed very highly. However, High Commissioner appears Io have an excellent chance of making amends in the highwcight events at Wanganui. Easter Time and Orapai are making good progress at New Plymouth with their training. Orapai will contest the Flying Handicap at Wanganui, a race he won last season. On the way he has been acquitting himself of late the Thespian—Winkie’s Wheel gelding promises to go (dose to repeating the performance. Easter Time has seven furlong engagements to fulfil at Wanganui. Henry of Navarre, the winner of the hurdles at Alarton. has been successful at his last three starts in this division. He is a five-year-old gelding by Arausio —Matty and is trained at Awapuni by Airs A. W. Ale Donald. All Humbug, wi ti nor of the open sprint at Alarton. began his three-year-old racing 12 months ago with great eclat by winning four races on end, and his record for the season was six firsts, a second, and two thirds in 15 starts. This suggests that the son of Humbug ami the AH Black mare All Cerise will be worth following. He is a well-built chestnut, and has proved in hack class that he is up to weight. Air W. R. Keniball’s two-year-old filly Quietly, is making good progress at Trentham under W. AlcConkey. On a recent galloping morning, she held ami beat Pegged Exchange, and again the other morning she proved superior over four furlongs in 49 1-5. Both these youngsters are forward, and wil] go to Wanganui for the Debutante Stakes. K. Voitre Ims been engaged for Pegged Exchange, and R. McTavish, who usually does Air Keniball’s riding when available, will be on Quietly. After her win on Saturday, Senorita will not be eligible for the maiden event on the first day at Wanganui, but will race there on the second day. The filly’s success at Alarton came as a surprise to her connections, who, however, are likely to be more sanguine. next time. Caught in the mood she has a fair amount of pace and should prove useful in her class this spring. Before he left for Alarton it was thought that King Ford might, be in need of a race, and this was borne out by the fact that after leading until well up the straight he faded out at the end. The race, however, will be greatly to his advantage, and he should give a. better account of himself at Wanganui next week.
