Six Scotsmen figured in the Newcastle United team in the Cup final at Wembley, and there were a couple of Welshmen in the Arsenal elevon At odd times it is said that the English Cup should be for English alone, but the suggestion doesn’t cut much ice. When the competition started ir 1871-2, there was no intention that it should be limited to English Clubs and Englishmen. Indeed, Queen’s Park. Glasgow, was one of the Clubs that subscribed to the fund for the purchase of the cup. In the old days, Scottish Clubs used to compete for the trophy. In 1885 Queen’s Park met Nottingham Forest in a semi-final tie at Edinburgh, and in 1887 Glasgow Rangers and Aston Villa fought a semi-final game at Crewe. Queen’s Park were finalists in 1884 and 1885. Renton and Partick Thistle have taken part in the Cup competitions, too, and in 1890-91, the 93rd Highlanders met Sunderland Albion in the first round. Tt is stated that with the possible exception of 1880 and 1902, Scotsmen have played in either one or both teams in every Cup final since the start. Nottingham Forest have played F.A. Challenge Cup-ties in all four countries. The English Cup has been won by teams composed solely of Englishmen on eight ioceasions since professionalism was legalised. Motherwell has put an end to Glasgow's monopoly of the Scottish League Championship, which has lasted for 29 years.
