At the resumption ot the Premiers' Conference here to-day, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Steven: . yielded to the warning given by tne Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, that a’i of the Government’s of Australia must be prepared to make drastic cuts in their deficits next year. Mr Stevens said that he hoped to be able to progressively reduce his State’s estimated shortage bv four millions per year. He emphasised that, by straining at what he termed excessive economy, they might damage the national position. Mr Forgan Smith, the Premier of Queensland, intimated that he would do everything in his power towards the balancing of the budgets. He urged the revision of the Premiers’ Plan. He pointed out that, despite the Premiers’ Plan, the budgets were still unbalanced, while unemployment was on the increase in all of th n States. The restoration of confidence, said Mr Forgan Smith. was as far off as over. Economies themselves, lie added, could not possibly establish the budget equilibrium. Tune 29. After explaining that, by ignoring the. Premiers’ plan, the Lang Government had permitted the Now South Wale: - deficit to increase by five millions above the estimate for the current year. Mr Stevens urged the Prenre’s’ Conference to make a fresh beginning; that was, by adjusting the original Premiers’ Plan to the facts as they now existed, covering the t: iff, the exchange, the cost of production, and Government expenditure. Thus, ho said, they could deal with the problems as a whole, instead of piecemeal. Above all. a constant endeavour must be made to get people back to work. He suggested that the Premiers’ Conference should adjourn for a month in order to deal with the problems outlined. The Premiers of the other States, Victoria. Tasmania. South Australia and West Australia, expressed their general support of the Premiers’ plan.
