There is little or no change in the position of the wrecked Kaponga. A visit yesterday to the North Tiphead revealed the fact that the vessel has now firmly settled down on the point giving the impression that attempts, if any are made, to remove the vessel j will occasion no little trouble. The general condition of the wreck is such i that very little material is coming loose and being washed up on the beach, but the recent heavy seas have had the effect of considerably demolishing the deck house and fittings while a crack is visible on the port side amidships. The foremast has become loose and quivers as each successive wave is shipped. A heavy swell was running yesterday, and the lower deck was continually awash. The stern deck has not been affected to any great extent by the waves and it is from this position that salvage operations. if undertaken should be found most practicable. On inquiry yesterday it was ascertained that no word had yet b°en received from Lloyd’s regarding the disp'osal of the vessel, and thus n o attempt at salvage would be made in the meantime with a possibility that none would be made at all.

The result is that, though the Minister of Employment has prom-

ised that all relief workers shall not be any further obligation upon Hospital Boards, there is now too great a tax on the resources of the Grey HospitalBoard. * Lots of people wait till it rains be fore they think of buying an umbrella, and consequently have to go home in the rain, and have a dismal time generally. The same thing applies to the purchase of a hot water bag early in* the winter, so that 'full advantage may be obtained and comfort for the cold weather assured. This reminds us that Parkinson and Co. have just landed a second supply of hot water bags. They are of the best qiftlity and obtainable in all sizes. Even poking at them makes you feel warm. Why not get one at once? Call in at Parkinson’s and see them—Advt. A strange story of the power of the human voice is told in a letter to an Aucklander from a friend in America. “There is a local man by the name of Kellogg.’’ said the letter, “who, in his attempt to imitate bird notes, has stumbled on some remarkable effects. He can utter a not e directly, or by radio, and the engine of his auto will immediately start running. He can utter a different note, and p’nt out the Aflame of a gas burner, five feet away. . He can change the typh of flame with his voice, and cause it to dance st will. Tn a third case a note can penetrate the consciousness of a boy who has* been absolutely deaf and dumb all his I fe. Isn’t it wonderful what old Mother Nature has tied up in her apron * waiting to be revealed by someone more in rune than the rest!*’
