Alterations are at present being made in the carriages employed on the Christchurch-Greymouth-Hokitika railway express service, the vehicles having been taken for the purpose to the railway workshops on the East Coast. It is expected that they will be restored to use again at an early date. The main alterations are that the interiors of the first-class cars are being finished off in a mahogany colour, and the seats re-conditioned and re-uphol-stered in red leather, while the secondclass car seats are being removed, and will be replaced with the Scarrett seat, which is much higher backed and more .comfortable. These seats are upholstered with red leather. In addition, the lavatory fittings and car floors are being improved. Altogether the vehicles are being brought up-to-date in keeping with those on other main services, and no doubt passengers will greatly appreciate the added comfort which the Department is providing. Tn view of the times, the Railway De partment is to be commended on it? effort to better the service.
