(>moo looks very well at present. He' pulled up lame after running a pool I race in the Egmont Steeplechase, and I his connections were considering turn-1 ing him out for good. There is hope, however; that Omeo may yet be alright. ns veterinary advice was procured, and he is to be kept going and will race at Wanganui.

It is doubtful if Wiltshire is* as good as he was when he won his two Nationals, although he cannot be dismissed from future calculations. He is a horse who has usually shown his best form at the end of the winter.

It is intended to race Appledore over hurdles at Waikato next week. D. O’Connor will have the mount. Corry ’s other pair, Make Up and Land mark, are thoroughly fit horses and can be relied upon to improve as ’chasers. They look like doing great service during the winter. The Blenheim owner missed the Wanganui nom inations, but he will take them to Waikato next week. Lancer is to be tried out as a steeplechaser by 11. Nurse. He has shown good form over the hurdles, and as he is a proved stayer, long journeys over country will suit him. He has been clearing the obstacles like a veteran. Royal Bengal has made substantial improvement lately. His win at Hawera was not against strong opposition, but he carried 9st and did it easily. He will probably be sent to Auckland for the winter meeting.

The Tiger had his seventh win for the season at Hawera. He is a four-year-old by the Australian bred stallion Sheffield, who is by Bright Steel, sire of the Melbourne Cup winner, Westcourt. Liane, dam of The Tiger, was a sister to that highly successful sire Linacre. The win of old Nukumai at Hawera was very popular. He is a remarkably well preserved veteran, and a report of his deeds on the turf would fill a column. He is now approaching his fourteenth year, and has had 135 races for 26 wins, 24 seconds and 19 thirds, a total of 79 placings. In all he has won £9,900 in stakes, all for Mr S. G. Davidson. Last Thursday Nukumai only just won. He has been up only a few weeks, so he ought to improve, but one can hardly expect, at his age, any substantial development.

Mr Boyd Davis has arranged to leave England for Australia this week and intends to bring several horses, including Potchim, who ran third in the Liverpool Spring Cup recently. In . March, Mr Davis sold his Little Flutter colt by Stratford to Sir Alfred Butt for 2000 guineas and a contingency of £5OO. The Irish Sweep on the English Derby closed on Monday. It will be drawn on May 27. The race is run on June Ist. There wore over 7,000,000 counterfoils in the drum when the sweep on the Ain tree Grand National was held. Sparkling Morn is a smart hack and will improve. She is the first foal of her dam, Diamond Ring, who was a good performer a few years back, especially on soft tracks. Sparkling Morn is held on lease by Mr A. Barlow, of New Plymouth. Birkbeck’s injury in the Marton Steeplechase was not serious, but proved sufficient to keep him from running at Hawera. Only once out of the money was the unique record attained by Mr G. D. Greenwood’s famous racehorse Gloaming, whose death occurred on Thurs day evening last from inflammation of> the stomach, following a cold. During his long career on the turf, from when, he first started racing as a three-year-

old in the 1918-1919 season, and winning the Chelmsford Stakes at his initial appearance, Gloaming was only once out of the money. He started 67 times for 57 wins and nine seconds, a phenomenal record. The only occasion he was unplaced he was never actually in the race, as when the barrier went up he was tangled in the tapes and fell. This was in the N.I. Challenge Stakes at Trentham, in 1919. Gloaming held the stake winning record for some years, gaining the supremacy when he passed Carbine’s figures, £29,626. Amounis finally headed off Gloaming’s £43,100, and of course Phar Lap beat them both. Trainer R. J. Mason was the man largely responsible for the brilliant son of The Welkin and Light who was twice named. Gloaming’s career on the turf extended over many seasons, and he was never over-raced. He won races in New Zealand and Australia from half a mile to a mile and a half, and he won most of the classic and weight for age contests of this Dominion. When sold as a yearling in Sydney, many of the ringsideexperts passed him because they diet not altogether approve of his points. L. G. Morris, the Marton trainer and jockey, broke a bone in his hand while schooling Consent last week. The injury was sustained when Consent slipped at a jump. As a result of his victory in the Egmont Steeplechase on Wednesday last. Make Up has been rehandicapped 51bs for the G.N. Steeplechase, bringing his weight up to 10.9. Nukumai, who won the Adamson Steeplechase, will not be re-handicapped. TROTTING. Explosion, winner of the Whitford Handicap at Alexandra Park is an aged half-brother by Nelson Bingen to Enawah, the Sapling Stakes winner of 1927. He has raced with moderate success only, both as a pacer and a trotter, and has been through a lot of hands, but it appears that he is only now showing the real form with which he has always been credited. Victory from 108 yards behind was a notable effort. First Flight, who scored a double victory at Auckland, was unlucky in the principal event at the Te Aroha fixture the previous Saturday, in which race, after being left badly, she finished fourth, but won later in the day. She is a well performed five-year-old by Blue Mountain King from Guiding Star, who is still another of the successful Logan Pointer producing mare??. NEWMARKET STAKES. LONDON, May 11. The Newmarket Stakes resulted:— Mirage 1, Rolling Rock 2. Bulandshar 3. Six started. Won by four lengths, with/three-quarters of a length between second and third.
