WESTLAND RESULTS

Two New Councillors (From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, May 11. The Westland County Council elections were held fO'day there being cou. tests in all three ridings. In the Southern Riding there were six candidates for four seats; in the Central Riding rive candidates for three seats, and in the Northern Riding three candi. dales for two seats. The polling was heavy, especially in the south, where the farming interests had a full ticket, and succeeded in electing three of the four, but Mr W. J. Jeffries retained his seat. In the Northern Riding there was no change, while the Central like rhe Southern Riding saw one sitting member defeated. The voting figures a re as follows:— Southern Riding. J. Donovan 442 \V. Houston . . . . 289 • For this riding Mr McKay (President of the Harihari Farmers’ Union) replaces Mr Houston. Central Riding. W. Jamieson . . . . 296 R. Chiesterman . . .. 246 M. Keenan 232 (Elected.) 11. Wells 174 R. Whiley 174 For this riding Mr Jamieson replaces Mr Wells. Northern Riding. B. Ward 177 J. A. Murdoch . . . . 168 (Elected.) H. Witherington . . 36 There is no change in the representation of this riding. Mr Jamieson, who topped the Central Riding poll, is a well-known Koiterangi farmer. In the Southern Ridng, Mr Donovan is a veteran, and his high poll ig a testimony to the manner iin which he has represented the area. Mr Searle and Mr Jeffries sat in the I last Council, as also in the preceding : one. Mr McKay, a well-known Herepo farmer, who replaces Mr Houston, has | not previously stood for th-' Council. I GREY COUNTY COUNCIL. The new Grey County Council members are as formerly, namely: Messrs J. Rya 1 (present Chairman), J. W. Hannan, W. T. Ogilvie, H. G. Carter, J. Mulcare, A. McDonnell, G. Bia r, A. Robinson and A. Donnellan.
