Mr LI ' • Milne (Assistant Harbour Engineer), stated last evening that so tar he could not account for the piles being, carried away, especially without lea> ing any trace of the broken remains The piles had been down only eight months. The only suggestion he could offer for their breaking off was that they had been eaten through by the toredo (borer). A man is to patrol the North Beach until the piles are washed up and then it may be possible to ascertain the exact cause.
