WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Deputations to Wellington. WESTPORT, May 4. The meeting of the Progress League which had previously been adjourned to enable recent deputations .to Wellington, to submit a report, was held last night at the Town Hall. Mr J. M. Robertson presiding. Mr Menzies, referring to the interview with the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Rail, ways Board, regarding the request that the Buller Gorge Railway con struction should be proceeded w th, stated that the deputation., which consisted of Messrs Holland, Mclntyre Llewellyn and himself, was very sympathetically received. Mr Sterling stated that the completion of the line would entail an expenditure of approxi mately £300,000. He (Mr Harkness'* suggested to -.the Prime Minister that the Government should provide the difference between relief wages and stand-

ard wages for the work, but Mr Forbes indicated that no money was available tor the puipose. The unemployment fund method was then advocated, and Air Forbes promised to discuss the matter with the Chairman of the Railway Board and forward a reply later. Mr Llewellyn, the other local member of the deputation, was unavoidably prevented from attending the meeting. On the motion of Mr Fox, seconded by Mr D. Moloney, it was decided to ask the Prime Minister to visit the district and to notify Mr Holland of the Invitation. A vote of thanks to th deputation was carried.

Mr Harkness reported in connection wih the deputation regarding the transfer of the Supreme Court sittings to Greymouth. Mr Holland an./ himself comprised the deputation to the Min-

ister of Justice. The latter was con vinced that a sitting should be held at Westport but as the arranging of the Coast circuit was a matter for the Judges any alteration of the itinerary came within their sphere of activities.

Thn Chief Justice declnod to receive a deputation of any kind. The Minister said he wou\] consult the AttorneyGeneral in reference to the req est. As a result of the visit he (Mr Harkness) was sure that the sittings of the Supreme Court would return to Westport. A vote of thanks to Messrs 11. E. Holland and J. H. Harkness was carried with acclamation. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the League on the fourth Tuesday in May. B.H.A. Meeting.

Mr C. Sara occupied the chair at the usual ft rtnightly meeting of the Hoc key Association. An application from M’.ss McElwco for a transfer from Westport to Wesley Club was, after a lengthy discussion acceded to. An invi-

tation from Nelson C ub ask ng the Association to send a ladies’ and gents’ am to that district this season, was li. Id over. Mr Thorp wrote, thanking the Association for appointing him as delegate at the annual meeting of the N.Z. Hockey Association. It was dec (led :to conduct the annual six-a-side to- rnament on May 12th and to hold a re-union of past and present players on the same evening at the Elite Tea Rot ms. It was decided to ask the Canterbury Hockey Association to send 51 men’s team to Westport to play a Buller representative eleven. Mr J. Bowden was appointed sole selector for the season. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 17th. A vote of thanks to the chair and to Mr Robertson, for the use of the room, concluded the meeting.

Hospital Board Elections. At the forthcoming elections for rej resentat’on on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, four candidates, nominated by the Medical Association, will seek the favour of the electors. Mr Mclntyre, the present Chairman, will be opposed by the Secretary of th? Millerton Medical Association, Mr R. Fin-

layson, who should command big support. As a result of the able manner in wh ch Mr Finlayson has conducted the affairs of that body, during his long period as Secretary, he is well entrenched with the ratepayers on the Hill, and is certain to receive a big vote. Mr Albert Wath-ey, of Denniston, is also bound to demonstrate his popularity at the polls. In the Ngakawau d’strict, Messrs Cox and Tyler have been nominated by the Stockton Medical Association, and the workers a-v expected to throw their full weight behind their candidate. It is not a mixed electorate, the vast majority of ratepayers being workers, and it is to be hoped the four candidates above men ■. oned will receive '.the substantial sup. po-.t they are entitled to. The fact that it is the first occasion on which the country Medical Associations have put candid tes in the field has occasioned very keen interest to be associated with the elections and the results are bound .to be awaited w'th much concern by those who have a family resemblance to nominees who are opp'os. ng the Association candidate;,.

at your door. Be wise and grasp it by turning your buying into saving. Gibbard’s Stocktaking Throwaways in this issue make plain the way. Andy Phillips is now at the Sergeant’s Hill Hotel, where a welcome awaits all.—Advt.
