, A farewell social will be tendered to Mr and Mrs D. S. Clay on Monday' night next. Mr Clay has been in! charge of the local school for over five years as Headmaster. Keen interest is being taken inSouth Westland in the election of four’ Councillors to. represent the Southern. Riding on the County Council. New blood is entering into the contest on. this occasion, including Mr J. Cropper (a well-known resident of the Waitaha' Settlement) and Mr J. J. McKay (of Harihari, another well-known settler, and the President of the local Branch of the Farmers’ Union, also chairman of the Inter-Wanganui Dairy Factory). The annual show here in aid of Church parish funds takes place here on Thursday afternoon at the Public Hall.
A large number of sporty visited the various lakes with gun and dog on May 2nd, being the opening of the season for shooting.
The Rev. Mr • Newcombe, who has been on his first Far South trip, experienced fine weather for it. Favourable weather greeted the Weheka Sports Committee for their annual meeting which took place last Saturday. Quite a large number of local residents were in attendance.
Mr Baron and Party completed the contract entrusted to their care last week, thus raising the main highway for a distance of six chains. This piece of road was always dangerous to the motorist in flood time.
