REEFTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.} BEEFTON, May 1. Visitors to Maruia Hot Springs last month were more numerous than in April of any previous year, anil included: Archbishop O’Shea, Rev. Father Seymour, Mr and Mrs Douglas, Mrs A. Douglas, Mr and Mrs Shirtcliff, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Dr. and Mrs Conlon and family, Mr and Mrs Brough, Mr Carter, Mr and Mrs H Wiekeu, Mr and Mrs Wells, Mr McMahon. and Mf a ud Mrs Wright. The death is reported at Sydney or Mr W. “Hooley” Power, formerly a well known miner in the Inangahu-'i district, after a long illness. Deceased worked in many of the mines in this district, and later in the tunnel or Orongorongo. He was a practical miner. His many friends in Keelton will learn of his death with regret. There was a very large attendance at St. Stephen's Church last evening when the Girl Guides and Brownies, tinder Captain Kearns, attended in full force. The Rev. W. Bell preached an eloquent sermon suitable to the occasion, and this was listened to with tn-, greatest interest.
Waratahs beat Kiwis by 1(5 points to 6 in the opening Rugby competition game here yesterday, before a good attendance. Play was keen from the outset, the Waratahs having a slight advantage. From a high punt by Morris, well" followed up by Waratal forwards the Kiwi full-back was bustled and a try was scored for W<:ratahs by Black. Waratahs kept up pressure and several scrums were form ed close to the Kiwi line. Finally Prentice cleverly forced hi,s way over on the blind side and Hunt converted with a good kick. Kiwis, with a seiies of forward rushes, secured a Rueout near Waratah’s line, and from t:..* A. Robertson scored. In the second half Waratahs started a hot attaci., several penalties taking place through Kiwi players lying on the ball, and Scott kicked a penaly goal for Waratahs. Waratahs kept up pressure . and from a hot piece of forward play near the Kiwi line, Dellaca almost scored but a force down resulted. Kiwis then attacked strongly and Burns went over near the corner to score a good try. Both teams were now feeling th 1 strain. Waratahs worked their war to Kiwi’s line and from a scrum Williams scored, Hunt easily converting. Kiwis thereafter had rather the better of things, but Waratahs tackled well and there was no further score. M. Sara stood out for Kiwis. Combinajtion won the game. Mr M. Banks referred ably.
