COLLIERY FIRE

( Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn). SYDNEY, April 26. The fires in the abandoned colliery at Greta near Newcastle, have extended considerably and are now a definite menace to the safety of the main Northern railway line. The flames have begun shooting above the ground from another spot some distance from where smoke is issuing, endangering the main Northern railway. The flames, which rose to a height of sixty feet, caught the p'it head of the central G ta colliery and destroyed practically a'l the overhead structure. DESTRUCTION NEAR NEWCASTLE. (Received April 26 at 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 26. The colliery fire at Greta is still blaz’ng fiercely. The whole c ountryside is darkened b a black smoke p'all and objectionable fumes. The pithead buildings and the machinery have been totally destroyed, and the damage is estimated at twenty t housand.
