RETIRING SOON

A DOZEN MEMBERS Of the Upper House It is not generally known that of the thirty-four members of the Legislative- Council twelve retire this year. Nine of them retire on May 7th next, and three on the 28th of October of this 1 year. The names of those retiring on 7th May ar e the Hons. E. W. I Alison (Auckland), D. T. Fleming (Otago), G. J. Garland (Auckland), J. B. Gow (Auckland), A. F .Hawke (Otago), Sir John Sinclair (Otago), W. Stewart (Auckland), G. M. Thompson (Otago), and W. H. Triggs (Canterbury). Those retiring on the 28th October are: Hons. G. Witty, Sir Heaton Rhodes, and L. M. Isitt. As far as can be ascertained, the Government does not intend to reappoint the retiring members, some of whom seem through age to be beyond active work. Of the remaining members, eight come from Otago, four from Canterbury, four from Wellington, two from Auckland, two from Taranaki, two from Nelson, and from Marlborough there is one.
