LEAGUE FOOTBALL
• ENGLAND’S FINE SIDE. ONLY WEAKNESS IN HALVES. ■The final trial at Leeds for the selection of a team for the Australian tour disclosed weak half-backs, fast, powerful forwards, swift, strong-run-ning centre three-quarters, brilliant, speedy wingers, and magnificent fullbacks. The wonderful form shown suggests that, provided the half-back problem is settled, the team will be the best ever sent overseas. Amongst the 10 players watched, no suitable link was found for the outside half position, and when the touring team is chosen this position is likely to be left for further consideration. A problem has also arisen concerning the scrum half, where Evans failed to display suitable form Sullivan’s all-round display assured his inclusion, and amongst others believed to be certainties are Ellarby, Woods, Hudson, wing three-quarters; I Brogden, Dingsdale, centre three-quar-ters; and Thompson, Morgan, Horton, I Hodgson, Feltham, forwards. | The council refused Australia’s re- | quest to allow their English representative to sit thereon, but he can attend meetings without voting.
The team is:— Full-backs: Jim Sullivan (Wigan captain), A. Resnian (Salford).
Centres: Stan Brogden (Huddersfield), W. Dingsdale (Warrington), G. Robinson (Wakefield), A. Atkinson. (Castleford).
Wing three-quarters: A. Ellarby (St. Helens), J. Woods (Barrow), B. Hudson (Salford), S. Smith (Leeds). Five-eighths: I. Davies (Halifax), A. E. Pollard (Wakefield). Scrum Halves: Bryn Evans (Swinton, vice-captain), L. Adams (Leeds).
Front row forwards : L. White (Hunslet. rake), J. Thompson (Leeds), W. Williams (Salford), N. Silcoek (Widnes). Second row forwards: W. Horton (Wakefield), M. Hodgson (Swinton), W. Fender (York), A. Fildes (St. Helens).
Loose forwards: J. Feetham (Salford), F. Butters (Swinton). It will be Jim Sullivan’s third visit to Australia, but his first as captain. He and several members of the team were here in 1924, and have, therefore, retained their form well. One of the new men from whom brilliant football can be expected is Brogden, who has a deal of pace. He and Ellarby should be a strong attacking combination.
