WESTPORT NOTES

(On! Own Correspondent.) Racing. WESTPORT. March 15. The acceptances for the galloping meeting show that all owners on the Coast and many from the Ipg racing centres will be represented at Westport on Saturday next. The support accordied to the eight races on the card is highly satisfactory and with many very fast horses engaged, everything, if the clerk of the weather will continue in a good mood, should he bright and brisk, and should attract a big attendance. The dimension of the fields, especially in the chief event, are something to be pleased about, even if it only evidenced the fact that through these hard times the sporting spirit still survives and that this popular fixture has lost none of its attractiveness to owners. Bill Rosenberg Passes. The news of the sudden death of Mr W. Rosenberg, Tiroroa, who has for ’many years conducted successfully the hotel in that township, was received with profound regret by a wide circle of friends in Westport and surrounding districts. Mr Rosenberg, who suffered from an affection of the heart, retired last night in apparently his usual health, and was discovered dead this morning by his wife in bed. Deceased was a gentleman of outstanding characteristics and was imbued with many charitable qualities and his untimely death will be regretted by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Very sincere sympathy is extended to his wife in her sad affliction.

Sporting Week-end. Apart from the pleasure that will be derived from the racing, visitors will have a treat in store at the Theatre Royal, where the monster boxing tournament will be held on Saturday night The amateurs engaged have always provided good sport and with the object of keeping their reputation unsullied, are in strict training for their bouts when it is expected the attend anee will be spoken of as the “biggest ever” and will prove that this popular sport still retains its grip in Westport.

Coal Shipments. The shipments by the Westport Coal Company for the week ending March 12th were: Coat 3781 tons 17 cwt. coke 90 tons 6 cwt. Local sales amounted to 39 tons 7 cwt.

Bowling. Tn the pennant competitions Millerton is in a strong position and will enter upon the final round with a lead of three points from the Westport B representatives. The final round will be played at Denniston this week-end. The official opening of the Waimangaroa Green marked the steadily growing popularity of bowling in the Buller district and the now Centre now embraces six clubs. The function was marked by much enthusiasm and there was a big assembly of bowlers from various clubs. Mr P. Struthers, President of the Buller Centre, officially declared the green open and his remarks were supplemented by Mr Wilmot, Secretary of the Centre. The first kitty was sent on its journey by Mrs Lunn, amidst applause. The pairs championship, which was competed for at Millerton by representatives of the local club. Denniston, Sergeant’s Hill, Seddon ville and West port was won by the last-named, who were represented by Messrs H. Levy (s) and C. Mitchell (lead). The pair finished up with three wins and one loss to their credit. Comfort. Fully recognising that if the play’s the thing, comfort should be a matter of equal importance, Mr H. Morgan, proprietor of the Talkies, has in view the installation of an up-to-date heating apparatus for the winter months and his enterprise should result in the building of big business during that

period. The comfortable seating and high class entertainments have always been a feature of the Victoria Theatre, and this further consideration for the public will enhance the good opinions of its many patrons. “Larry O'More.” The role part in the above Irish play to be presented at the Theatre Royal on St. Patrick’s night will be taken by Mr H. Maitland and his choice can bo accepted as a guarantee that the interpretation will be all that could be desired. Cricket. The defeat of St. Canice’s eleven by Denniston was not generally expected. A feature of the game was the splendid innings played by Wells for Denniston, who got to within eight runs of the century when he was clean bowled by Eddie Holder. Denniston went to the wicket first and compiled 224 runs. Holder 57 and MeHerron 67 were the chief contributors to St. Canice’s total of 189 runs. Denniston won by a margin of 35 runs. Doyle, bowling for Denniston, was the most destructive trundler, his average reading seven wickets for 40 runs.
