Relief Subsidies MR. O’BRIEN’S REQUEST. (Special to “Argus.”) WELLINGTON. March 15. Mr J. O’Brien (Westland) tabled a notice in the House to-day to ask the Minister of Mines if ho will take steps to have the applications for relief coming from outlying district’s to the officers of his Department dealt with more expeditiously than they are at present Mr O’Brien pointed out that the applications' for assistance to min ers • ?nc aliy referred to the Insector of Alines’for :i report. When tin- applications are ones coming from somewhere unknown t-> the officer, Jia said, the Inspector may be a Jon" distance away, and much valuable tine is therefore lost if ho has to visit, or report on the locality which it is proposed to work. Mr O’Brien said that any application made by a letter which is countersigned by some prominent person in the district from whence it comes should lie accepted.
