VALEDICTORY

MR AND MRS HUTTON. Yesterday afternoon, at tho conclusion of school, the staff of the Greymouth Technical High School assembled to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Hutton, who are leaving shortly for Gisborne, where Mr Hutton will take up the position of Principal of the Gisborne High School. On behalf of the staff, a presentation of a handsome beaten-silver tea and coffee service was made to them by Mr W.< Judkins, who referred to his long and happy association with Mr Hutton during the nine years the school has been in existence. Other members of the staff spoke in feeling and appreciative terms of Mr Hutton’s fine achievement in building up the School and Hostel to their pre sent state of development. Mr Hutton, in replying, mentioned that the success which had crowned his efforts had been due to the splendid support of the whole community, and to the loyal co-operation of a most efficient and enthusiastic staff. He traced the growth of the school from its beginning, making some amazing references to the strenuous early years, when the present, beautiful school ground was newly-cleared bush land while the small number of rooms necessitated classes being held in cloakrooms and corridors. Mr J. Hutton said that he was leaving the West Coast with very real regret since he felt that wherever his future work might take him, the Greymouth Technical High School would always remain “his own school.’’
