In the Irish elections the latest-pro-gress .-r-e turns show the position of .the Parties-as follows:— Fianmi Fail Party .. . 38 Government . . 30 Independents .. . . 10 Labour ..... £> The heavy poll is delaying the counting. Mr Cosgrave increased his vote by 1000. Mr De Valera dropped 1400. Mr A. Byrne (Lord Mayor of Dublin an Independent) has been elected. Dan Breen, a Republican I.R.A. veteran, has' been elected for Tipperary. The following are among those elected:— Dublin City North. Mrs CollinsO’Driscoll (Government); LongfordW<6stmeath. General Maceoin (Government); Cork, R. S. Anthony; Tipperary D.. Morrissey. Both these are Independent Labourites, expelled from tlie party bi October, for supporting the Public Safety Bill. (Received February 19 at 9 p.m.) LONDON, February 19. Later progressive returns at 12.30 showed that the state of Parties in the Irish election was:— Government 30 Republicans 40 Independents .. .. 10 Labour .. ». .. 7 REPUBLICAN GAINS. LONDON, February 19. The state of Parties in the Dail Eireann at 1.30 o’clock was as follows: Government 31 'Republicans 43 Independents .. .. 10 Labour 7 Nearly Absolute Majority FOR MR DE VALERA. The state of Parties in ;the Irish Free State election at 2.30 o’clcok was as follows:— Republicans 46 Government 32 Independents . . . . 10 | Labour 7 PROGRESS RETURNS. LONDON, February 19. A message from Dublin states that the present indications (at 4 a.m.) are for a close finish. A change of the Government is nor yet certain, although Mr De Valera’s party may be the strongest unit in the new Dail Eireann.
LATER. In the Irish elections the Republicans have gained two seats from the Government, two seats from the Independents and one seat from Lab-
De Valera’s Party GAIN VOTES GENERALLY (Aus. & N.Z Cable Assn). LONDON, February 19. In the Irish elections the Government candidates appear to have dropped votes almost everywhere. Electors rewarded Labour’s alliance with the Republicans with the defeat of many Labour candidates. All of the Communist candidates were rejected. WHERE GOVERNMENT SCORED LONDON, February 19. The total votes polled by Government candidates in the North Dublin constituency was thirty-six thousand against Mr De Valera’s party’s total of twenty-five thousand. The highest undivided poll in the whole Free State was President Cosgrove’s P.R. HELPS GOVERNMENT. LONDON, February 19. President Cosgrove had heretofore complained of the vagaries of the system of Proportional Representation, but he has reason now to bless that system because it has enabled some of his candidates to scrape homo from near the bottom of the poll.
