QUOITING

(By °Pin Heid”)Judging by. the large crowd that attended the game between Somerville and Pinstotter at Blackball last Saturday, the game has taken a firm hold there. I reckoned that something good was on for that day, but once again Somerville won “on the bit”. So far he has met none who seems capable of giving him a hard game, and Saturday’s game was no exception. This appears funny. Take the Blackball Club, and we have twelve of the best players in the code, but when opposed to Somerville, that little bit of “devil” necessary to win through seems to be lacking. In making this statement. I only refer to long distance games. Of the various handicaps, some have “had the ivood” on Dick, but I venture to say that in anything over 21 shots Somerville would invariably win. The only thing whereby T can account for it is,’ temperament—or lack of it. Whilst on this subject, 1 may state that Bob Clark and his guide Dod differ with me. Well, the argument will be finnally settled on Saturday next as Clark and Somerville meet in the fourth round of the Cup at Dunoilie

that day. I certainly think Clark will stretch him better than either Meikle or Pinstotter have done, but, at the end of the day, I still fancy Blackball will have one representative less in the Cup. Anyone interested in the code should not miss this game as T consider they are the most evenly matched pair on the Coast. The other game due this week-end is tiiat between Rae (Blackball) and Page (Runanga), postponed from last week on account of injuries to Page. It will take place at Taylorville and will draw a large crowd. I intended seeing this game, but I heard that much “skiting” from Dod about what his man is going to do to Somerville that I simply must be at Dunoilie. T hope Bob doesn’t intend to “stall,” the same as Dod’s other protege did one particular Saturday. As this is the last Saturday before the A. and P. Handicap, these two games must take place, or the player defaulting will for- ’ feit the tie. In a phone message I had last week it would appear that the Karoro Sports . Club were desirous of putting on a handicap this Saturday. A few weeks | ago I advised the various sports secre-* taries to get in touch with me if thev intended staging quoits, but Saturday, was the, first intimation I had. and un-

fortunately it came rather late for m to cancel the two ties already mention cd. However, it will keep till lat' in the season. 1 would like to poi” out that the entrance fee (2/6) for th players who have taken part in the C is due on Saturday, and I would ! obliged if the Runanga and Blackb: secretaries will see to this matter. Not being satisfied with Penman (Dunedin) acceptance of Somervill* challenge, 1 would like to meet Mr Art strong, of Dunoilie. next Saturday, di ‘ ing the couse of the Clark v. Bonn ville game. If possible T would obliged if he can produce the letter nreceived from Penman. The following are the full details the Cup games up till last Saturday:First Round.— Somerville 41 Wright 25: Spence 41 v. Graham Rae 41 v. Rutherford 27: Dick Clav 41 v. G. N.
