Miss M. O’Brien, Wellington, is at present visiting relatives i n Greymouth, Mrs Wilkinson, seur., who has been visiting Dr and Mr a A*. W. Wilkinson, has left on return to Auckland. Miss A. Oliver, South Canterbury, is at present visiting relatives in Greymouth. Mr J. Mathieson is a patient at the G*rey Biver Hospital where he has undergone an operation. Mr W. Manderson, formerly of the West Coast, and now of Gisborne, is at present visiting Greymouth. A London cable states that new. members of the Royal Academy are Sir Herbert Baker, Spencer Watson and Mr W. G. de Glenn. The death took place at Christchurch on Saturday of Mr John Edmond Hood father of Mr S. Hood, of Greymouth The late Mr Hood was aged 67 years. A New York cablegram announces the death at Long Island on Tuesday night, of Minnie Maddern Fiske, aged 66 years. The engagement is announced of Ivy, third daughter of Mr and Mrs T. G. Kitchingham. Boddytown, to Thomas, only son of Mrs and the lain Mr T. Tarrant, Essex, England.

It is announced that M. L. Page has been chosen as captain of the New Zealand cricketers in the first Test against the South Africans, com-' mencing at Christchurch on February 27th.

A cable states that the Prince of Wales on Tuesday flew to Birdon Camp. Aidershot, on a farewell visit to the First Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, of which he is Colonel-in-Chief. The battalion leaves for Palestine next week. The King (says a cable) has approved of the conferring of a Knighthood on Lieut.-Colonel Hassin Suhrawardy. Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University who was largely instrumental in .saving the live of Sir Stanley Jackson, Governor of Bengal, when an attempt on his life was recently made by a girl missionary student at the University. Mr H. E. Holland, Leader of the , Opposition, will leave Westport cn Saturday morning, travelling via Greymouth and Christchurch, for the opening of Parliament, next week. On Friday evening he will address a pre-ses-sional meeting in the Westport Town Hall, when the Mayor will preside. The meeting will commence at 8 0 ’clock.

A London cable yesterday stated that the Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay MacDonald, was expected, after leaving the nursing home where he has made a good recovery from his eye operation, to attend the usual Wednesday Cabinet meeting, and he will remain at London for a few days before leaving to take three weeks’ rest, »is ordered by his doctor.

A Press Association message announces the death yesterday at New Plymouth, of Mr John Andrews, aged 89, a Maori War veteran and pioneer settler. He was born in New Plymouth and after serving in the war, spent some years in the South Island goldfields, eventually Taking up land in Taranaki. He was elected io the Provincial Council in 1875, and served on many local bodies in Taranaki.

The death took place at. the Grev Hospital on Tuesday night, of Mrs Isabel Anderson Dunlop, at the age of 86 years. A native of Glasgow Scotland, the deceased came to New Zealand about 25 years ago. She had resided at Dobson, until about two rears ago. when she entered the Old People’s Home. Her husband predeceased her thirty years ago. The deceased is survived by one daughter in Scotland, a niece (Mrs C. Ryland), and a nephew (Mr J- Porter), both of Christchurch.

A Wellington wire records the following Union S.S. Company staff changes: —Mr S. K. Sleigh, manager at Dunedin and secretary o f the company, and Mr F. L. Bis, manager at Hobart, will retire on superannuation at the epd of February. Mr J. H. Gilbert.

The wedding was solemnised at St. Patrick’s Church yesterday afternoon, of Nellie, third daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Morrish, Preston Road, to Robert William, eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. Leach, Preston Road. Rev. Father Gregory performed the ceremony. The bride, who was escorted by her father, was attired in an ankle-length frock of light biscuit celanese with hat and shoes to tone, and she carried a shower bouquet. Miss Lily Morrish attended her sister as bridesmaid, and wore an ankle-length frock of pink silk with hat and shoes to match. The duties of best man wer e carried out by Mr Thomas Leach, brother of the bridegroom. After the ceremony the reception was held at the residence of the bride’s parents, where Mrs Morrish received the guests.
