At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr A. Naylor, J.P., Thomas Theodore Edward Farrell, aged 36, was charged with the theft of a gold watch valued at £lO, the property of Stanley Gray, of Sillwater. The watch which was stolen from Gray’s bedroom at the Junction Hotel. Stillwater, at about 10 o’clock on the previous evening, was recovered at 9 o’clock yesterday morning by Constable J. Rodgers, of Brunnerton, who arrested the accused. As other charges are pending, a remand was applied for. and was granted to February 25th. Bail was fixed at self £2O and one surety of £2O, or two of £lo.’ The accused is a stranger to the district.

In view of recent local cases of in fantile paralysis which proved fatal, notice is to be take n of the warning just given by the Health Minister, who

says the reporting of three cases also in the Southland district is regarded by the Health Department as a danger signal. The disease is very rife in Australia. It was prevalent in New Zealand in 1925-26 and in 1915, and is prone to occur in the late summer and ailtumn. Six cases were recorded in four districts for the week ending February Ist; six more the following week, and four last week. Supplies of convalescent serum are being obtained.

There were 190 men, married and single, employed bry the Greymouth Borougn ÜbuTwil under the No. 5 Scheme last week. This week the number will not be so great as with ihe resumption of work at the Dobson Mine some twenty or thirty men will be struck off the Greymouth list. The Borough Engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid.), / seated to }an “A/rgus J,y reporter yesterday, that this week’s Government allocation will allow all the men on the list being given their scheduled number of day’s work, Relief workers are at present employed on levelling work at McLean Park, on reformation work at the end of Preston Yn forming footpaths in Buccleugh Street, and in the construction of Mount Street, while gangs are also at work in Cowper and Marlborough Streets on sewerage work. Last week a party of unemployed Dobson miners were engaged in Puketahi Street, but no work is being done on that street this week. No curbing and channelling is at piesent being done in the Borough.
