At the Moonee Valley races to-day, the Moreland Handicap resulted: Movie Star 8.3 (A. Reed) 1; Gold Digger 7.4 (Little) 2; Sir Graculus B.S (King) 3. Ten started. Won by two lengths! three-quarters of a length. Time 1.31. RACING NOTES. Lady Pam and Peter Jackson will be ridden in their Sydney engagements 1 in the Autumn by R. Reed, who will also again have the mount on Nightmarch if the last-named makes the trip. Babel did not fulfill her Trentham promise at Wingatui. She was never in the picture on the second day. The Quorn won very convincingly at Dunedin last week and looks good for further successes in the near future. According to a Dunedin writer Black i Duke had every chance in his races ' last week, but though he finished third on the second day, he was not good enough to win. When Assemble dropped her rider, W. Cooper, in the Flying Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday, the jockey sustained three broken ribs. As a result of the incident a general warning was given all riders. Red Racer showed his best form to date when he -won the Dunedin Cup from end to end, but on the second day he scraped a leg and was last nearly all the way. Princess Argosy was the only one of J. M. Samson’s big team at the Dunedin meeting to score a win. Silver Ring’s easy win on the first day at Wingatui sent him out a hot
favourite on the second day, but after - getting away badly, he did not look like winning, and finished last in a field of five. Nightmarch was a slightly better! favourite than Silver Paper in the James Hazlett Memorial Gold Cup, but he had to strike his colours to Cricket Bat who made the top weights carry their imposts all the way and won in time equalling the race record. Cricket Bat’s win in the. Hazlett Memorial Cup was a very popular one and marked Sir Charles Clifford’s first success in the race. Gesture made no mistake about the Flying Handicap at Dunedin and won in a manner suggesting further successes early. Thornton and Cough had the finish of the Abbotsford Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday to themselves. The former was always prominent and stalled off a strong challenge from Cough to win decisively. Arden’s Beauty, winner of the Hopeful Handicap at Dunedin on Saturday, 1 is by Shambles from Murihiku. She raced away at the barrier rise and gave nothing else a show. TROTTING NOTES. R. W. Franks has put the imported stallion Travis Axworthy into work again. He has just finished his stud duties for the season. Miss Joan Direct, an English-bred pacer, arrived at Auckland last week and went immediately into F. J. Smith’s stable at Epsom. Actor, in W. J. Tomkinson’s stable, is getting through plenty of useful work, and will soon be ready for racing. This son of Author Dillon and Marie Tempest has both speed and stamina. Real Girl has done well in her work
since racing so attractively at the last Addington meeting. J. J. Kennerley has not had her long, but he has her in great form and looks certain to win a good race or two before the season concludes. Great Logan, who at his best is one of the best sprinters in the Dominion, has joined J. S. Shaw’s stable. He has in the past been trained successfully by O. E. Hooper. Author Jinks is now located in E. R. Husband’s stable at New Brighton. This son of Author Dillon and Lady Jinks has been troubled for some time past with unsoundness and has not raced since he ran second in tho New Zealand Cup last season. He has undoubted speed and stamina, and if Husband, who has leased Author Jinks, can keep him sound, he will win races. John Jinks, half brother to Author Jinks, by John Dillon, has also joined the same stable.
