Monthly Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Grey Hospital Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs. J. W. Hannan. (Chairman), J. Kyle, R. McTaggart, R. E. Clarke, H. G. Carter, R A Barrowman, J Mulcare, F. L. Turley and Mrs K. O ’Brien. The Hospital Boards* Association wrote definitely cancelling the 1932 Hospital Boards’ Conference. The Laboratory Nurse, Miss F. Braidwood, reported as follows, giving returns for the month ending December 31st, 1931: —Total number of specimens examined 152; value of work £95 6s 6d; total number of specimens examined for year ending 31st December, 2389, total value of work £l4Ol 15s. REPORTS. The Matron of the Rewa Hospital, (Miss E. L. McGibbon) reported as follows from December 17th, 1931: Patients admitted 18, discharged 9, births 17, remaining in hospital, 9 patients and 8 infants. The Medical Superintendent (Mr J. i F. C. Moore) reported on the following matters: —Isolation Ward: I would suggest that the Visiting Committee inspect this ward with a view to authorising purchase of sanitary equipment to complete the repairs in hand there. Visitors: With regard to the recurring difficulty with hospital visitors, 1 would suggest that patients, on admittance to the Hospital, be offered the privilege of sending their licke s to any relative or friend they may prefer to visit them; also that small ticket racks be provided for the Hall Porter so that visitors will not ha* T e access to the board containing the car is. Old People’s Home: In view of recurring difficulty in dealing with individual eases in the Home, I suggest that, where trouble is experienced, on the recommendation of the Medical Superintendant, payment of pension be made in weekly, instead of monthly instalments, by the Secretary. Laboratory Fees: In view of the Westland Hospital Board withdrawing from the Laboratory agreement, I am of the opinion that | only specimens certified .to by the local • Health Inspector, should be regarded I as exempt from payment. Patients remaining in at end of month, Hospital males 47, females 25; Old People’s Home, males 33, females 9. The report was adopted. The Acting-Matron (Sister Cullen), submitted her report as from the 17th December, 1931, as follows:—Re. nursing staff: Nurse McClury s still on sick leave, add Nurse Brown has been on sick leave since 9th January. Nurse J. Smith, Nurse Cotter, and Nurse O’Connell have resumed duty after annual leave. Mrs Rudge is at present on annual leave, and is being iclieved by Miss Blackie. Nurses Blanchette and O’Mera have been : uccessful at the recent State Examination. Pro. Tach- ! eh commenced duty on 6th January. Miss Park, N’ght Attendant at the Old People’s Home, commenced duty on 22nd December. Re. domestic staff: ! M'Ss Ahna Groom has resigned, Miss Lilly Jobbling has been On sick leave since 12th January and Miss Do.is Gilmore has been on sick leave since 16th January. Miss Ida Gillingham had an accident, while on duty on 20th January a nd is at present warded with a fractured arm. 1 have to acknowledge I with thanks the following gifts and do- ' nations to the Hospital and Old People’s I Home:—Flowers from Mrs Shallcrass, Mrs Pumess and Mrs Davis; magazines and illustrated papers from Mrs Lok, Mrs East and Mrs Davis; old linen from Mrs East, and Mrs Carter. Christmas Cheer from: Mr Chalk, Mrs Cain, Friends (2), Flowers and greenery from Mesdames Walton, Hambleton, Harley, C. Moss. Gilchrist (Christchurch), State, Richardson, Lousley, Axelson, Roberts, Wilson and Friends, Butterworth, McGuire, W. McCarthy, Cain, Taaffe, llopgood, White, Hamilton; Misses Craig, Wadsworth, McCarthy, Faulkner. Messrs Suddens and Absalom. Messrs Duncan McLean 200 cigarettes; 24 packets dates, 12 boxes figs, 28 crown mixture, Petone Woollen Manufacturing Coy., (Grey branch), 8 bath ing caps, 22 combs. Joh n Burns and Coy., shaving soap and cream, tooth “‘brushes. Mrs Fordham, face cloths, Mrs Gouldsmith, vases. Old People’s Home: Mrs Wilson (greenery), Mrs Fletcher (sweets), Mrs Gilbert (flowers), Mrs Olli ver (clothing), Mrs Collins (books and papers), Mrs Rose (magazines), Mr Chalk (papers), Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Shannon (gramophone records, eggs, and cakes), Church of Christ Choir (Concert and Supper), Mesdames Freeman and Parker (afternoon tea), Blackmore’s (cordials), the Library (books). Mr Beban (free afternoon at the pictures), also thanks to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Church of Christ for visits and sweets; the Cobden Choir for monthly music, and the various churches for Sunday Services. Christmas Cheer is also acknowledged with thanks from the following members of the Licensed Victuallers: Messrs J. Sartoni, J. Becker, G. Paul, of Manthorpe, D. Wallace, J. Becker, P. G. Low, G. Burger, F. Izzard. W. Brown, E. Quinn, F. Higgin?. W. Kells. A. Lees, W. O’Brien, Kettle Bros., W. Mitchell, J. Hassall, T. Milligan, 11. Steel, A. Kyle, Roberts, J. McLeod, Clark, J. Darwell, W. Gieseking, E. McDonnell, W. McKechnie, Mesdames Ware, Moore, Marshall, Bradshaw, Mclntyre, Keating, Lewis and Nicholls. The report was adopted. The House Manager (Mr A. J. Fraser) reported for the month as follows:—Relief workers have been engaged in painting, carpentering and general labouring about the grounds. It is regretted that owing to the activities of the wire worm, the potato crop did not come up to expectations. The plaster work in the Nurses’ Home is in need of attention. of kitchenware for Rewa. The report was adopted. The Acting-Secretary (Miss K. Greaney) reported that a meeting of the Visiting Committee was held that afternoon. The following members were present: Messrs J. W. Hannan (Chairman), R. E. Clarke, H. G. Carter, and Mrs K. O’Brien. The Committee proceeded to Rewa Hospital where the Matron’s repor was read and received, and the following recommendations were made by the Committee: —That the House Manager be authorised to purchase four ■wicker chairs, for patients, and six ward chairs, and that the down pipe from the tank be renewed immediately, also the roof gutters and spouting be cleaned out immediately; and that the telephone be extended to the Labour Room. The Committee then proceeded to the Grey River Hospital where the Acting Matron’s report was read and received. The report of the Medical Superintendent was read, and arising therefrom the following recommendations were made: —The matter of the patients having the option of selecting their own visitors was approved, and the matter of a container for the visiting cards was left in the hands of the Medical Superintendent and House Manager. Laboratory Specimens: The Committee recommended that in future all specimens for Public Health pur pose.** be signed by Mr Bettie before they came before the Board for payment. Arising from the House Manager’s report the Committee recommended:—That the plastering in the Nurses’ Home be carried out, also that the two sanitary basins required in the Isolation Ward be purchased by the House Manager, and that Mr Fraser purchase the required cooking utensils for Rewa Hospital. The report -was adopted and the recommendations given effect to. Accounts amounting to £2190 Ils lOd were passed for payment, and accounts amounting to £1595 16s Id were ratified. The Chairman reported that any of the unemployed who were in distress and came to the Hospital had been • supplied with sustenance.
