(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, January 21. Among those who have offered to join the proposed Flying School here if one Greymouth aspirant for a pilot’s status. At the meeting last evening at which the Aero Club was formed there was an interesting address by Mr Jack Renton, a certificated flyer, who explained the purpose of the meeting, which was the establishment of a flying school at Hokitika He also dealt with the training and requirements necessary before one could become competent to take charge of a machine, and was listened to with the keenest of interest. There are promises from others to join the Flying School in addition to those already enlisted. Amongst the parcels sent by the air mail yesterday was a small sample consignment of special dressed timber sent by the Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills Ltd., to Wellington. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., presiding. Judgement for plaintiffs by default was given in the following debt claim's:—Westland Hospital Board v. Geo. ‘Stuart, £4/19/6 and costs £1 4/6; Peter J. Kir wan v. Wm. Barrowman, £2l/18/8 and costs £4/16; Robert Lynn v. P. Watherspoon, £25 and costs £4/5/6; Stanley Bassett v. Thos. Muir £6/4/11 and costs £l/10/6: A, H. Nancekivell v. P. Watherspoon £3O and costs £4/5/6; Public Trustee as executor estate A. 'A. Andrewes v. Edith Jones £lB and costs £2/9/-. For driving a motor lorry with defective breaks, H. R. Schroder was fined £1 and costs 18/-. Constable Drummond said the case had arisen from an accident in which defendant’s lorry had been involved. Defendant had attributed the accident to the condition of his brakes as well as the slippery surface of the route. J. Nohra was fined 5s and costs 20 s 6, for failing to keep to the left of the traffic dome. R. J. Pedder for allowing a horse to wander was fined 10s and costs 20s Cd. For letting cows to wander F. Selby and F. Preston were each fined 5s and costs 20s 6d. H. Turnbull was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order. Mr J. Murdoch for plaintiff said difficulty was experienced in securing payment.s Defendant was fined £2) 2s and costs, in default one month’s imprisonment. On a similar charge, Jas. Williams was ordered to pay costs of breach of a prohibition srder, J. Lincoln was fined £1 and costs.
At the Magistrate’s Court to-day a charge of dangerous driving was preferred against John Hart. Evidence was given by Wm. Wylie tha* i November 24th, he was driving into town with a load of timber and, when on • the Kanieri bridge he collided with a car driven by defendant. Air , Murdoch for defendant said both i vehicles had been damaged, Hart’s to 'the extent of at least £2B. This case would be a preliminary to a civil case. The Magistrate decided that the present case should be adjourned until after the civil action. Hokitika cricket teams for the week-end arc: —'Senior v. Richards, West, Conning,, Stapleton, Butland, Moynihan, Collett, AndrewsThe Land Board yesterday received six applications for areas on La Fontaine swamp. The Commissioner stated the Department had recently decided not to carry out further drainage operations on the swamp and under the circumstances the Board had to consider whether it "was advisable to grant any permanent titles over the area. He proposed before next meeting to make a further inspection of the area, and would report to the Board. It was now seven years since the drainage operations commenced and the results were not as successful as had been exlpected. The applications were accordingly adjourned until next meeting. Air A. Folley, who has been in Hokitika for the golden jubilee of his parents’ marriage, returned to Napier this morning. Air W. E. Barnard, AI.P., of Napier who has been visiting the Hokitika district, returned north by this morning’s express. The Alagistrate to-day dealt with nine charges of being on licensed premises after hours, six being decided against the defendants, with penalties, while the Magistrate dismissed those against three men. In one case the defendant said he did not know how to plead. “I don’t know until I am aware if the licensee of the hotel was within .the right -in asking me to have a drink for old time’s sake, considering if was Christmas morning.” he said. Constable Drummond: “Come on one way or the other. Don’t, waste the time of the Court!” Defendant pleaded not guilty. The Alagistrate: Considering .the occasion, I will give you the benefit, seeing that it was Christmas time, although I really shouldn’t. I will not enter a conviction, and so the ease will be dismissed.” In another ease, evidence was given by a constable that the licensee had stated the defendant was “an absolute nuisance.” Defendant: Did the licensee say that I was a. nuisance? The constable: Yes Defendant (to Magistrate): I’d like the ease adjourned to subpoena the licensee. I did not have a drink, and was on the verandah when the constable arrived. Constable Drummond: You deny the evidence give n by the Constable then? Yes. They’re absolute lies. Constable Drummond: The constable is therefore committing perjury? Yes. perjury. The Magistrate was satisfied to discount defendant’s evidence and impose a conviction and fine.
