CROSSING TRAGEDY

EXPRESS STRIKES MOTOR CYCLIST. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 7. Fatal injuries were received by Erie Andrew a single man, aged 21. when a motor cycle that he was riding whs struck by the engine of an inward express train at a level crossing at Islington a.t five o’clock this afternoon. Andrew was employed as a chemist at the New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s freezing wo’/ks at Islington. As he was riding over the crossing, the cow-catcher of the engine caught him, and he was flung a distance of eight or ten yards. He was picked up unconscious, and was rushed to the Christchurch Hospital by the extress train, but he died at seven o’clock. The crossing is an open one, allowing a clear view of the line and it has a compulsory stop sign. Andrew apparently, did not see the train, nor hear the whistle.
