RAILWAY MANAGER
Salary Question AND SUPERANNUATION. (Special to “Argus.”) Among clauses in the Finance Bill No. Four which are likely to arouse interest among the Members of Parliament is a provision for the retire-, ment of the General Manager of Railways, Mr Sterling, about whose salary questions are frequently being asked by members of the Labour Party. Provision is made for Mr Sterling to retire, so far as his superannuation payments are concerned, at any time after September 4th, 1936. The interpretation of this clause is that Mr Sterling will retire on a basis of superannuation as if he had served 35 years in this position. Hitherto, his agreement with the Government provided that he was to retire o n superannuation of approximately £2300 a year. This provision will reduce his superannuation to approximately £lBOO a year, which will be reduced by income tax to something in the vicinitv of £l3OO. Mr Sterling, as Chairman of the Railways Board, however, will receive a salary of £lOOO a year.
