The arrival of Japanese reinforcements decided the Nolnni River battle, according to Mukden despatches today. . There was a mjixed brigade, commanded by Major General Haseby, employing bombing planes. This brigade turned t'lie tide in favour of the .Japanese, although the latter admit sustaining heavy casualties. The Japanese head-quarter s declare that the Chinese are in full retreat. General Alachusan’s .Chinese forces despite their superiority of numbers, and although equipped with modern weapons df warfare, were unable to withstand the Japanese aerial attacks and they retreated in co/nparative dis order, leaving the Japanese ?in full pos session of the river area, and enabling the railway bridge repair gang to resume. Estimates of the Chinese casualties have not bee n received, but it is believed they were considerably the heavier, the Japanese bombers inflict ling the heaviest casualties. A s the result of the Nonni River battle, the Japanese are reported to be transferring the Changchung garrison forces to Nonni. z
LEAGUE COUNCIL
Verbal Intervention (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received November 8 at 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 7. A Geneva message states it is believed that the Council of the League of Nations will be now forced to take unmistakable action in order to strengthen the hands of the Moderates in the .Japanese Government at Tokyo. 11 is suggested that the Council might threaten that the other m.embors of the Council withdraw their diplomats from Tokyo. League’s Appeal TO AVERT FIGHTING. GENEVA, November 7. Al. Briand. on behalf of the League of Nations’ Council, has telegraphed to China and Japan, reminding them of their previous assurances, and appealing tha- instructions should be issued to /he commanders in.
