TO-DAY’S CJ.C. PROSPECTS Gay Crest’s Chance BLACK DUKE GAINS FAVOUR. ■ (From Our Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 6. EvPi since the handicaps were <le- ! clared, Gay Crest was installed the I favourite for this year’s New Zen I land Cup, and he is likely to hold this position on ‘.he day. Undoubtedly, he is the best-performed horse in the ' race, but the two long stretches, and his weight, will make his task no easy one. On a course with more turns in it, Gay Crest could be regarded as a I cor ainty Two factors however must be considered in selecting him as a winner. K'r Davis said that some negotiations lad been made for the champion to go to America, but at present he is not likely to go. MELIOURNE, November 6. The owner! of Phar Lap are undecided about the Mexico trip. MELBOURNE, November 6. Scratching! for the Batman Stakes are Chathant and Ronaldino. The weather forecast for to morrow is cloudy ard sultry. STREPKON A “WASHOUT.” I LONDON, November 5. | St rephon who was second favourite, although tpped to win, was unplaced in a £l5O mile and a-quarter race at Worcester. There were nine starters. Strephoi has been allotted 8.8 both in the November Handicap and the> Derby Cut but in the critics’ opinion, has no ria nee in either race. RACING NOTES. ( A. E CTis will have the mount on > AutopayHn the Stewards’ Handicap. | W. H Jones will ride Ephialtes in I the N.Z Cup. Tn the Welcome Stakes,) ,I ones vill ride either Michael Angelo t or Volgi Boatman. R. C'iveny is slowly improving from his recmt accident. G. If Humphries will ride Royal Babv n the Stewards’ Handicap. His other pounts on (the first, day at Riccartorpvill include Jayson, Desert Song and leacon Fire. R. Reed was offered several mounts in IM Derby. He will be on Nightguard from A. McAulay’s stable, B. H. I\brri R will ride K«ng Colossus and T. Geen Cricket, Bat in the N.Z. Derby. Addtional N. Z. Cup riders are:—Royal Jpve, J. W. Jennings; Red Racer, N. J Dwyer; and Charmaine, G. Bark,eyJ Qrinthia will be ridden at Riccarto n by D. O’Connor. H. N. Wagging will!

be on Hounslow in the Linwood Handicap. One of ;the new arrivals at Riccarton who looks like paying her expenses is Ruling Light a recent wiunc- at Duncd’n. She is a three-year-old filly by Chief Ruler from Simper, flam of affec'ion, Razzle Dazzle, Gold Light and Beacon Light. F. J. McKay trains her for Mr W. T. Hazlett. On Tuesday J- T. Jamieson saw the Melbourne Cup and caught the express for Sydney that evening. Ammon Ra will be senjt to Sydney and will leave Sydney for Auckland in charge of Jamieson by the Ulimaroa, which is duo on November 19.

I Mahora was galloped,on during the race on the second day at O‘ak>, and has been on the easy list since, which accounted for his absence from the Waipawa meeting on Labour Day. The performance of Ephialtes in the County Cup at Carterton on Saturday was not an encouraging one from a New Zealand Cup viewpoint, (says an exchange). While admitting that he received interference going out of the straight, he was well enough placed on '.the home turn to have won. for Gray moved him up on the rails twice in the running, and was within striking distance as they came into line. There was no life in his finishing effort, however, and he was never at any stage galloping iu the bold style that is customary wiith him. Kahikatoa returned to Hastings after his racing at the Wellington meeting and his trip to «Riecaitto n appears to be indefinite (says Tuesday’s Dominion). Gray will ride him in the Cup if he goes South. Kahikatoa is, however, at Riccarton and i s now almost certain to be a starter in the Cup. Heater Gray will ride Chief Cook in the Linwood Handicap., and Gold Paper, sister to Gold Tinge, in the Welcome Stakes, i n compliance with an arrangement made during Gray’s visit to the Dunedin Meeting early last month. Baekerg on. the opening day of the Melbourne Cup meeting on Salturday did uot have a very successful innings. The shortest-priced winner was Oratorian at fair odds. Vauntry was just below double figures and the rest of the winners were at doubles. There was no betting in the Melbourne Stakes won by Phar Lap. Jaloux entered Cup discussions as the result of his win in the principal nice at Banks Peninsula on Saturday. It was his first success, but some of his form is up to good company. He worked -particularly well at Trentham one morning prior to the recent meeting over seven furlongs, but he was unable to do better than third on the second day. Jaloux is not a brilliant horse, but he appears to be able to stay well, and this, may enable him to be on hand at the end of two miles next Saturday.

While Spearful puf, up a creditable New Zealand Cup trial when he won the Wairarapa. County Cup at, Carterton on Saturday, he did not score so well ag some of his admirers for the Riccarton race could have wished. He was doing his best to head off Charmaline. The latter is a smart little galloper, but if Spearful is to wi n the big two-milc event he wil] require improvement. It would seem that he is always likely to do better for a strong rider (than for a lightweight, and the best may not be got. out of him today. Still, he is in good form, and is

one of the most likely lightweights in the race. It is reported that Cricket Ba{t has been under veterinary treatment since his return from Trentham. where he received injuries to his off hind leg through being galloped on during the running of the Wellington Handicap. The colt is making satisfactory progress, and it is hop d that he will be fit to resume work some time next week. After his enforced spell, however, if seems too much to expect Hrat he can be at hi s best for his Derby engagement. TROTTING NOTES. The Timaru Trotting Club have reduced stakes for the January Meeting from £1320 to £lllO. Admiral Bingen was responsible for a good work-out at Addington this week. It. is reported that Impromptu hn” not been shaping well since returning from the North Island.

It is said that Glenrossie was travelling like a sure winner in the New Zealand Cup Trial when he broke up. Logan Park. Carmel and Wrackler showed themselves to be ready to repeat their best form by filling the places in the New Zealand Cup Trial. Meiteor is reported to be pleasing the track watchers at Addington.
