Berkley Suitton ami Lawrence I Lung were charged with theft of parts -of a telephone at Cape Foulwind Sut- ] ton, who had previous convictions, was ’ fined £2 and cos’s, and was ordered to 1 pay one half the damage; and Lang was fined 10/- and costs. A fortnight was allowed in which Ito pay. George Scrinigeour, Gordon McDonagh, Her--1 bort Reddington, Frank Fell and Hur ' old Parker were fined £1 each for wilfully damaging huts at Tiromoana, the property of J. McCarthy. Defendants wore also ordered to pay costs. George F-llio“ was sentenced to seven days’ in Westport gaol for drunkenness. Defendant had a big list of previous convictions. George Elliott applied for variation of a maintenance order made against him in July. The case was adjourned for a month Frederick Lynch claimed £7/15/- from J. McNiven for pa ; nting and sign-writing done at the Empire Hotel, Seddonville. Plaintiff stated that he had done work for defendant which was authorised and for

which he charged a fair price. After lengthy evidence was heard the Magistrate said there was no doubt the work was done. The question was who should pay for it. After reviewing ‘.the evidence judgment for the full amount of the claim with costs was entered for plaintiff. Judgment by defaul was entered in the following cases:-*- Griffe n and Smith v. Owen, visited the Greymouth Hospital to-day, where her husband is detained as a result of illness, but, happily is on the road o recovery. Herbert Hawkins. duplication for special sea beach claim.— Re commended. Dickson and Powell, app'irntion for ordinary alluvial claim.— Granted. William (lopgood, surrender of mining privilege.—Accepted. Coal Creek Mining Party, application for remission of rent. — Recommended. George Win, application for surrender of coal lease. —Recommended. Frank Thomas Mitchell, application for dam license —Granted.

BOROUGH AFAIRS. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council the following were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. H. Harkness.) Councillors . Menzies, E. R. Fox, F. Roche. J. Nahr, H. R. Young. C. Thomas, J. W. Robertson, J. Rad1 ford. An application from Messrs Rayner, Woodcock, and McNally for i cycle allowance was referred to the • Gas and Electric Supply Committee. St. Canice’s Crickeit Club ask--1 ed for space on the Square for prac--1 tree, and the caretaker was instructed 'to afford the required facilities. A request from N. Lory Thompson for repairs -o a footpath was referred to the ! Works Committee. A request from W. , S. Hardie regarding drainage was simi- [ larly dealt with. The Swimming Club I asked for the erection of an extra electric light at f he baths, and for the I bath s to be open at night; also seeking ’ their use on occasions of carnivals. All ' the requests were granted. C. B. Ar- | cher’s offer of £4 for a new tyre was I accepted. The Valuer-Genera] intimat- | ed 'hat rates paid on sections by Mrs I Snow should be refunded. A request ! from the Loco Engineer for water supply at Crane Wharf was referred to the ; Waterworks Committee. The Premier i notified tha,t Armistice Day should be ' observed. The Lands Department explained the layout of the street- near the Beach, and the Council decided to name the thoroughfares Forbes. Coates '■and Shellswell Streets. Correspondence f from the Minister of Justice imimati ing that the March sittings of the Su- | promo Court would be held at Greymouth. The manager of the Aba/ttoirs reported that the fees amounted to £124/14/9. Private tenders for printing the parking by-laws were received as follows:— Westport New s £2/17/6, ■ Geo. Aitken £3. supply of gummed articles was also accepted. The Finance Committee reported as follows: That the State Advances Depart mo lift be charged £2 per annum for water and sewerage services to section in Derby Street. The General Purposes Committee resolved mil i) dispense with the services of the caretaker nt the waterworks, and that work in the Gas Department be rationed for three months. It was also decided tha- the services of the assistant in the Gas Department and one of the street staff be dispensed with for i hree months. A report from the Reserves Committee was also read. The Borough Engineer submitted a lengthy roporji. which covered unemployment, relief works, water supply, electric supply, crusher and baths. Have you seen Jeff’s new Bowser! — Advt.
