Influenza is prevalent at Greymouth at present, and numerous residents have been compelled to lay up for a few days. Cr. Kitchingham at (the Borough Council meeting last evening said the Blaketown Lagoon was simply a breeding - place for mosquitoes. The matter was referred to the Health Inspector, The kerbing and channelling being carried out in various parts of the town, has made a big improvement to streets. The unusual spectacle of a man riding leisurely up Tainui Street on a bicycle hotly pursued by a pedestrian minus his coat,, was witnessed about 1.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The cyclist was riding very slowly, and the pursuer, a well-known local business man, soon caught him up. After a little argument the cycle changed hands, and the shopkeeper rode back to his place of business. It seemed that the cycle had either been taken in mistake, or —— ? A meeting of the West Coast Miners’ Council was held yesterday at Grey mouth, when there were present Messrs D. Hayward (President), W. Purdy (Secretary), W. Barber (Treasurer), J. K. Connell (State Mine), R. Connelly (Millerton), J. Mcßride (Stockton), J. McGregor (Reefton), and R. Clark (Blackball). Messrs J. Smeaton, National President of the United Mine Workers of New Zealand, and Mr A. McLagan, National Secretary, were also present. The meeting sat until 11 o’clock last evening, very important business being discussed. The Buller delegates leave on their return to Westport this morning. The driest place on the Wet West Coast is under one of G. A. Webster’s local-made umbrellas. These umbrellas are made specially to suit the West Coast climate and are kept in repair free of charge for 12 months. The prices are moderate.— G. A.
