OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT AND TUESDAY. "THE BETTER WIFE." A DRAMATIC THUNDERBOLT. Ruth Chatterton and Clive Brook, the delightful co-starring team, of "Charming Singers" and "The Laughing Lady,*" are co-starred in a new Paramount all-talking drama, "The Better Wife," to be screened tonight and Tuesday. Based on Gouverneuv Morris’s well-known story of the same name, it boasts a powerful dramatic situation. Expertly directed and splendidly interpreted by the cast, "The Better Wife" should prove to be one of the most entertaining picture's of the new theatrical season. In this new Paramount production, Miss Chatterton meets Neil Dunlap (Clive Brook), a brilliant attorney who, heartbroken because of his divorced wife’s marriage to a multi-millionaire, proposes to Pansy, declaring that even she would be a better wife to him than his money-crazed first wife. From this point on, the picture’s action takes a highly dramatic turn as Pansy, married to a man she has honestly fallen in love with, fights desperately to take her rightful place in her husband’s world. Miss Chatterton as Pansy adds another notable screen characterisation to her list of successes. Playing with sympathy and understanding, this noted actress of the stage and screen reaches new heights in a role that already is being called the finest characterisation of her career. And Clive Brook in the role of Neil Dunlap once again gives a flawless finely drawn performance. Others in the cast who do good work are Paul Lukas, Juliette Compton, Huntly Gordon and Tom Patrieola. HOSPITAL BALL. The fact that the Hospital Ball, to be held in Schaef’s Hal] this (Monday) evening, is in aid of the funds of the town’s most deserving charity, should be a strong inducement for dancer 8 to attend in large numbers, but apart from the object for which
it is being held the ball in itself, gives abundant promise of being one of the most enjoyable and successful of the year. Seel’s popular orchestra will provide the music for both old-time and modern dances, and the floor will l*e under the control of a n efficient M.C. The supper arrangements are in the hands of a capable committee, and no detail assisting .to make the dance an outstanding success will be lacking.
