Near Newcastle WHILE ON BETTING INVESTIGATIONS. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received October 11 at 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. October 11. While Constables Kenny and Smith were pursuing inquiries relating to starting-price betting transactions at Warn tab. near Newcastle, thev were shot by a man with a repeating rifle. Both were seriously wounded. An excited crowd gathered, and the man escaped, after firing a third shot harmlessly into the wai ing police car.
