There was an unusual occurrence at the Auckland Stud Company’s farm at Otahuhu, when the brood mare Thufence, the dam of Full Measure, gave birth to triplets to Whirlwind. ihe first was a big foal, the second of medium size, and the third about the size of a collie dog. The three died, Cut the mare has recovered. Cione, a half sister to Ammon Ra, foaled twins ♦<> the same sire. Chief Ruler has been well in the limelight this season with his two-year-oids. Broken Rule won the Wanganui Debutante Stakes, with another Jhief Ruler in Posy third. Broken Rule and Kula nut were second and third in the Avondale Stakes, and Broken Rule was third in the hand! | cap the next day. At Ellerslie on i Saturday Chief Ruler not only supplied the winner in Rippling Waters, uut also the runner-up, Broken Rule. Broken Rule is having a run of placed i-erformances. ihe consistent success of Messrs N. E. Aitken ami H. F. Wood on the turr has been a striking feature of the past and present season. Luck has played a prominent part in their venture, for it took some time for them to make up their minds to give the game a trial, and it is really due to the persistence of T. Pritchard that they became owners. Pritchard is related to Mr .-utaeu by marriage, and at the time he was training at Opalci he was immensely struck with the possibilities or Autopay. lie gave Mr Aitken no peace until the latter promised at least to go up to Masterton and have a look at th colt. Leaving Wellington in company with Mr Wood, they had no intention of making the purchase, but Pritchard kept at them, and extolled the possible virtues of Autopay (then in other hands) to such an extent that they allowed themselves to be persuaded, and the deal went through, Mr Wood at first leaving the whole matter to Mr Aitken, in whose colours he ran his first races. It is unnecessary to relate at any length how Pritchard’s judgment was thoroughly vindicated, lie won at two years, and last season commenced with a win, and went right on with consistent and improving form, including among his stakes a brilliant C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap. He won just £2OOO before being put away for* the winter, and he did so well during the spell that it was decided to try Sydney. Results have more than vtn-1 dicated Pritohard’s original opinion, and to him is solely due the success achieved, for Messrs Aitken and Wood, from the start, placed implicit confidence in him, and always were, and still are, guided by his judgment. Semper Paratus continues to do at-. tractive work, and his trainer, F. E. Jones, should soon secure a winning' bracket with him. Jones has the four-! j car-old filly by Arrowsmith, from Seaside, leased by him, in commission, and also is at present handling a two-year-old gelding by Night Raid from Wink-! a-Peep, bred and owned by O. E.' Hooper.

Altnough perfumes are usually asso- * ciated with the accessories of a woman’s toilet, another use to which they may be put is the taming of wild and restive horses, according to Mr A. J. Parker, who gave an address on the subject of perfumes before the 1 Auckland branch of the New Zealand Sanitary Officers’ Association. “Wise ostlers of the last century,” he said. 4 * used to place oils of spike lavender or origanum on the hand and then rub the nose of a restive horse, the process producing a state of peace and affection.” Ammon Ra is the seventh New Zea- ' land winner of the A. J.C. Derby in 15' years. His stake winnings are now in the neighbourhood of £20,000. He broke what has been termed in Australia the Limond Derby “hoodoo,” 1 and gave McCarten his second success i in the Derby at Randwick, his first! having been achieved on Ballymena inj 1923. Hyades, the dam of Ammon Ra. is by Hymettus, and traces back to the j Musket mare Elfin. Dr E. H. B. MiJsom, of Auckland, bred Ammon Ra Although he was decisively beaten. Johnnie Jason must be credited with a good performance, as after his Warwick Stakes win on August 29th his preparation was seriously interrupted by a cold. He is by Treclare, sire ot the 1930 A.J.C. Derby winner Tregilla. Johnnie Jason has 7.5 in the Melbourne Cup- Koomeela, who ran third,

is a brother to Amounis, and is trained by George price. He is engaged in the Melbourne Cup at 7.1. Mr T. A. Duncan’s pair, (’adlaml and Consent, made a good start for th.* present season. Consent ran second at Wanganui, 'and at Auckland on Satur day Cadland dead heated with Kozan. Consent drew No. I in the big field in the last race, ami had to be used up to hold his position, only weakening over the last half furlong. On the second day he won the six furlong event. These successes were gained against first-class opposition, and it is clear that L. G. Morris had his team very well. Neither Cadland nor Con sent was entered at the Wellington meeting, and they are also absent from the entries at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Cimabue has sharpened up as a result of his racing at the Wanganui meeting, and is now bowling along freely in his work;

Rippling Waters, the winner of the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, was got by Chief Ruler from Boynette, by Kilbroney—The Boyne, by Merriwee—The Shannon, by Torpedo, and is a member ot the Mermaid family. TROTTING. Mr D. Revell, the Auckland sportsman and owner of Fleet Arrow, who won at Geraldine .and paid over half a hundred dividend, will not forget the race for some time. It was intended that Mr Revell should have a “fiver” on hi- pacer, bu owing to a misunderstanding the money did not go on. with the result that the Aucklander missed having a substantial win.
