A.J.C. MEETING Autopay and Ammon Ra Win PHAR LAP AGAIN. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received October 4 at 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. October 4. The spring meeting of the A.J.C. opened at Randwick on Saturday in dull showery wea’her. The attendance was forty thousand. The track was in excellent condition. The New Zealanders enjoyed a royal day. annexing .he two richest races of the day. The exNew Zealand jockey, M. McCarten, was successful in each race. Ammon Ra proved himself the outstanding three-year-old of the season, winning the Derby in smart fashion. Running prominently throughou . he had the race in his keeping half a mile from home.

Autopay gave a sterling performance in the Epsom Handicap, running to the front soon after the barrier rose, and he was never headed. Ticino issued a strong challenge in the straight, but Autopay, finishing in bulldog fashion, prevailed by a neck. Results:— Hurdles.—Gadray 10.2 (McCurley) 1, Port Risk 9.6 (Haynes) 2, Banner Boy 9.8 (Cullum) 3. Ten started. Kirna was favourite. Ragatzky made the running from Port Risk. Prince Otto, and Gadray. Ammon Ra and Johnnie Jason. Passing the mile, Cirod showed the way to Ammon Ra, with Speedaway. Rondalina. Illustrious and Johnnie Jason, following. Half a mile from home, Ammon Ra ran to the front. From thence onward the race was never in doubt, The winner passed the post with two lengths to spare. Time 2.34?. EPSOM HANDICAP. Autopay was the first to show out from Havaspot, Ticino, Pentheus and Gesture. Passing the half mile, Autopay was two lengths clear of Ticino, Pentheus. Havaspot and Nut Cup. Autopay turned for home a length clear of Ticino, Pentheus, Treuiret’e. Gesture, Burracootboo. Stalling off a desperate challenge from Ticino, Autopay gained the victory by a neck. Time 1.37. SPRING STAKES. PHAR LAP 9.2 (Pike) 1 Chide 9.3 (Cook) 2 The Dimmer 9.3 (Bartie) . . . . 3 The other starters were:—First Acre, Concentrate, Loquacious, Carry On. F 4 rst Acre jumped away smartly. and led past the stand from Loquacious, Concen rate. Phar Lap and Chide. Along the back. First Acre increased its lead to three lengths from Phar Lap. Loquacious. Concentrate, and Chide. First Acre led into the straight. Phar Lap raced away passing the distance, and won with ease by two lengths. Time 2.335. Kensington Handicap:—First Division.—Panola 10.7 (Pike) 1, Mr Kerry 8.5 (Simpson) 2. Frontier 8.9 (Munro) 3. There were 15 starters. Mr Kerry led into the straight from Frontier. Lucre, Panola. Finishing strongly Panola gained the verdict bv two lengths. Time 1.264. Kensington Handicap: Second Division.—Dermid 8.6 (Cook) 1, Chemois 8.5 (Bartie) 2, Killarney 10.6 (McCarten) 3. There were 14 starters. Weo’ara was favourite. Chemois led to the distance from Dermid. Vali. Magnetic. Dermid challenged Chemois, and af,ter a sharp struggle, went on to win by a length and a-half. Time 1.26. NOTES ON RANDWICK RUNNING. (Received October 4 at 5.5 p.m.) The ex-New Zealander, Banner Boy. was by no means disgraced in the hurdles. Good judges express the opinion that he should turn out a profitable purchase for G. Nailon. Ammon Ea will be the last gelding ’o win the classic Derby, owing to the • new rule which debars an unsexed horse from competing. Ammon Ra’s winnings are now in the vicinity of ■ £20.000. He is described here as a brillian,t horse. McCarten. the rider of Autopay in the Epsom Handicap, said: “I was instructed to go out and break up the field. Autopay was fla-. out for five furlongs, whe n I gave him a bit of a breather. He stuck particularly well when Ticino came at him, and I was well pleased with the way Autopay hung on. ’ ’ Pike, the rider of Pentheus, said: “My mount was simply not good enough.” Chide’s effort In the Spring Stakes won him a host of admirers for the Metropolitan Handicap, for which he has displaced Veilmond in favouritism.

Chide returned to its best New Zealand form, and stuck .to Phar Lap like a champion. In this race Concentrate raced without any dash.

The New Zealander Love Song changed hands prior to the Epsom Handicap, the new owner being Mr J.

O 'Brien, who bought him subject to he unusual stipulation that if he ran into a place the sale would become void. Mr Jefferd leaves for New Zealand as soon as Cypress is fit to travel. In the October Sakes, Viol D’Armour won from Waterline and Hellenist in 1.391. The last four furlongs were run in 494.
