BOXING

GREY VALLEY BOXING ASSN. (To the Editor.) Sir:—Last month the Grey Valley Boxing Association made application t o the (Greymouth Boxing Association for permission to ru n their second tournament in the Wallsend. HaU on Saturday, September 26. The permit was granted, and. every member got busy to make the tournament, a success. We procured \the services of those we thought would make the Emt b-uts on the Coast. In addition, we selected a team: of amateurs Dorn Wes.port, and they immediately got into training to give us their best Furthermore, we did all possible to arrange a special bout between G McEwan (Invercargill), and T. Croft, our local champion, and arrangements between these two were almost ooimpieted when a. party of our local sports al tended a boxing contest at Runuijga. and hoard a whisper that Mr Beb:‘i,n was negotiating- .with Walker 1.0 stage a wrestling bout in the Town Hull on the date already alloted tn ns by their Association, and tlhiat J* would be neces.--a.ry for us to put our l uru-ament off. I, along with our President, (Mr McLuskie), interviewed Mr Beban. to see if this was correct, and he assured us that it was Wo explained that we were very disappointed over the manner in which we were treated, but the only consolati n we received was, “You can pvt your tournament off. There is going to be a tournament in the Town Hall on Saturday, the 26th.” What we want to know is: “Is Mt Beban the Greymouth Boxing Association, or has he the right to withhold a date already granted to us, because he gets an idea into his head that a night’s wrestling in Greymouth would be welcomed? I am a mepnber of the Greyni.outh Boxing! Association, and can honestly say, that not thre e members--.J th'at Association knew he was negotiating with the Canadian wrestler until I rang Mr Kim Williams and complained of the way we had been treated. Another little point I want to make public is: We donated £l4 out of £lB net profit frofn our first and only tournament to send McPhee and Croft, to the New Zealand Championships at Ashburton. The balance of the £4 we have spent in trying t. > arrange contesits for our forthcoming tournament, which, unfortunately, has been taken from us-. The reason we donated the £l4 was because the Greymmith. Boiling Association- were no«t financial cnouglf to send the men them elves. It can be plainly seen that we have been treated “dirty” I’iv the Greymouth Association, and if they think prosperity and success will come their way by actions like these, then I ask th(Jm t,’o take a fool’s ad vice and cut it out. Give the country Assuciati'ons a straight and honest go, and I ea n as- iure them that a 10-t of good will he done towards fostering the sport. Our last query is: When is this l wrestling contest coming off! With only a few days to go, our members are anxious to see who the contestants are, but up to date nothing hn.<* appeared in your columns to say whether Mr Beban has completed has firrangememfis yet,. It appears to us that the Brunner Boxing Asiociation

are nobody when Mr Beban thinks be can produce something bettor. This time he has failed, we are starry to say at our expense, bat neislt time w*> will be there, and show that we can produce something that will be an asset t< > tflita booqing game. This can only he produced by working together and 1 not. elapsing one individual as any mere important to his association than the other.—l am etc., H. ROBERTS, Secretary Grey Valiev Boxing Assn.
