The improvement in most districts is j naintained, .though Dacoites are still ) 7C-y numerous in the Thayety and Prorne districts. Surrenders continue. ’ and the number is now about 2950. ‘ Sixty-two prisoners were released ( during the week, and the number in! •ustudy is 1169. The Irrawaddy has been abnormally high in Lower Burma, aud there is considerable local flooding. The river j is now falling and it is hoped that no; j serious damage has been done to standing crops. ALPINE DEATH ROLL 85. LONDON, August IS. 1 “The Times’s” Geneva correspon-; dent says: The death roll in the Alps '< < thus far in 1931 is 85. j The latest tragedy involved two j brothers amj a friend. Ascending a « 1 mountain near Chamonix, they were j overtaken by a snowstorm at 11,000 feet, and forced to spend the night in | the open. One brother died. The friend slipped while descending and I ■ was killed# The surviving brother I reached a shelter hut, but died from ex-! posurc.
